Christmas lights

I have a couple miniature light sets that don't light, is there an easy way to troubleshoot them or should I just toss them out? Paul

As cheap as lights are I would probably toss them. You could plug the lights in and go inch by inch down the stand with a circuit tester and see where the short is. More than likely if no lights are burning it's at the male plug end.

I had three strands of LED light that would not would work last Christmas. I found the problem with all three. one was right out of the box. on all three there were several LEDs that had the leads corroded and the socket was corroded also. I salvaged the usable LEDs for a future project.

Go to You Tube and type in 'repair Christmas lights'. some neat, easy tips !
Do you have a 'beeper' voltage tester ? I am an electronics guy and I used to
spend hours with my ohm meter.. Now I now an easier way.

If the bulbs are starting to burn out, more will soon follow, it's time to replace the whole string. I've started replacing outdoor mini-lights after two seasons, most never made it past three seasons anyway. After Christmas, light sets are discounted about 75 percent.

Some have two tiny fuses in the plug. One for the first half of the string, the other for the second half.

to my surprise, when I took a load to the scrapper, I took 3 or 4 strings of non or partial working lights. He actually weighed them and I got a few bucks. I just wanted them gone. So recycle when you become too frustrated to work on them anymore. btdt lol gobble

Look for the Light Keeper Pro. Wally World has them around Christmas for just under $20.

It won't fix wiring problems and if most of the bulbs look dark it can't fix that.

My lights are modified so that they don't look like everyone else's and it saves me a lot time testing bulbs.
