Kellog American 335TV Compressor

I hooked a 5hp motor I had lying around to this compressor that has been sitting on edge of shop since my brother bought the place 10 years ago. Motor is rated for 22 amps. I put a single 5"pulley on the motor and tied to a breaker. Pump was open discharge. Stood behind the pole when I cut breaker on to see what would happen. Was able to turn pump by hand beforehand. Made a little noise but was pumping air. Let it run for a few, but motor wouldn't start it back up even though I could turn by hand...just hummed as if overloaded. Only tried a sec. Testing to see if worth messing with. Noticed some heat on low pressure side valve cover. Motor may not be heavy enough. 30# or so. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I always had trouble with the pulley on the motor walking once I nailed the alignment I drilled thru the pulley into the shaft a little and put a bolt in it to lock it into place.

What was motor rpm- 1725 or 3450? Did the start switch on the motor cut in and out okay? What was frame size of motor? 184T?

If you could turn the motor by hand, it should at least try to start.

If it just hummed with no effort to turn, sounds like the centrifugal start switch contacts are not closing. Could be corrosion, mud dobbers, mice got in while it was stored. You can pull the rear bell, clean the contacts, check the wiring and start capacitor.

Most belt driven compressors run in the 600-800 RPM range. Check your motor speed, calculate the speed by figuring the reduction ratio.

If you get the motor running, and the speed is right, and the compressor is healthy (valves clean and working, unloader working [if equipped], oil level correct), when the pressure is up near the cut out, check the motor amp draw, compare it with the FLA rating on the motor tag. A properly configured compressor will run right at the FLA rating of the motor. If it is below the rating, you'll be OK. If it is above, try a smaller pulley on the motor. Running over the FLA will overheat the motor, trip the thermal or burn it up.

After looking I thought was a 1750rpm motor turned out to be 3450. No wonder it was kinda loud with a 5" pulley. turning way to fast I'm sure. I'll keep checking things. Thanks for the replies.
