Champion Compressor

Anyone with air compressor experience, could you give me a area, on the unit, to look into as to why it takes so much longer to get up to pressure now. Model OE-40. Pretty old ? Thank you.

Bet you have the answer. Go to your local BIG STORE NAPA. They usually have the replacement blades for feeler gauges. They are extra long. Use a very sharp drill bit and a wood block to drill the hole in the feeler gauge if needed. Have replaced a couple over the years. Some compressors have those little round POP valves. Springs break or they get full of crap.

Pull the valve assemblies out (some are under caps on the head, some you have to remove the head(s).

Look for broken reeds, springs, anything that would cause the valves to leak. Also clean out any carbon deposits. If it's heavily carboned, changing to synthetic recip compressor oil will help keep it clean.

It may also have some type of unloader system for easy starting under load. These work in various ways, some use air pressure on a diaphragm, some have a check valve where the line from the compressor goes into the tank, other methods... Just look everything over, be sure the unloader is not keeping it partially unloaded all the time.

And there is the obvious, slipping/worn belt, clogged air filter, leaks.

I have 1 like that. some days mine can run for ever to build up pressure other days it builds right up. havn't had time to pull heads and clean it up.

Mine did that. It turned out that the head gasket was blown between the two cylinders and they were pumping into each other. Replaced head gasket and it blew, turned out the head was warped and had to be milled level.
