Thread Chaser

I needed a 9/16" fine thread chaser to clean up the threads on the hubs of a John Deere 953 running gear I am working on. Looked on line and discovered they only come in sets but I only needed one so I made one. This is not an original idea as I saw the tip on a web site. Thought maybe someone might benefit from my experiment. I cut 4 slots in one of the lug bolts with my dremel tool. The slots store the crud as the bolt is turned into the hub threads. It worked slick. A few times I had to back out the thread chaser and clean the slots then screw it back in until the the treads were clean. Sorry I couldn't get closer with my camera. My really up close photos were fuzzy. I have a lot to learn about focal length.

Sometimes if you put your camera in flash priority they will focus closer. My smart phone does. Handy little tip for ya.

I have been using that little trick for at least 30 years, but I usually use a bigger grinder and cut deeper grooves. Necessity is the father of invention.

. Came out nicely. I have been learning how to use a smart phone. They don't even print an owners manual. Just go out and crash a few hundred times till you learn.

Same trick works for spark plug holes as well . One tip , fill the grooves with grease , the crud sticks to this and doesn't go where it shouldn't in blind holes and the like .

My friend Joe did that with a large metric nut to save a huge damaged heat exchanger with aluminum threads. His boss thought he was a genius. I showed him the trick at my shop one day.

FYI

I've had great luck with these. They do sell individual pieces and or sets.

Been doing that for years. Also cut slots in pipe to make a new exhaust pipe fit in a manifold with bad threads.

A lot and time and effort for a sub standard threader every time you need one,I bought a real deluxe top of the line Greenfield set years ago at an auction for less than $100,they are usually on ebay pretty cheap.

I've got threading taps but my understanding is that threading taps can mess up existing threads and make the bolt a sloppy fit. Thread chasers don't make new threads, only clean up the crud from existing threads. I have tried threading taps in the past and usually can't get them completely through the hole due to the crud. The thread chaser worked good.
