Use for Old broken tape measure

I like to re-use everything, even stuff that's broken. I unwound the whole tape, cut into various lengths and use those for exact guides when I want every piece I'm cutting to turn out the same. I use a sharpie or other marker to mark the length I need on the cut up lengths of tape. Yes, they fill up with black marks after awhile from the different projects, but that's why I have several pieces. Eyes aren't what they used to be--it's easier than trying to read off 9/16" on a tape. If you have any other thoughts about making measurements easier, please share ;-)

I nail them to the front of a workbench--very handy when taking a quick measurement on something.

I will take a broken tape measure and tape it to the grade pole when shooting it with a construction level. The grade pole is marked in feet and decimal feet so the tape measure automatically converts it to feet and inches.

i take mine back to Harbor Fright and they give me a new one.get them free all the time have not bought one in 10 plus years

ole, I always hated dealing in 10ths. Was glad when they came out with "construction master" for easy convert.

I fastened an old tape across the front of a top shelf for a handy place to hold something up for a quick measurement. Never used it after I put it up - but it is still in the same place!

Thanks for the ideas--I'm sure others will find them helpful as well. In my shop today, going attach piece of the tape top my workbench. Nice idea :)

I have one that I broke the end tip off, so I cut it off at the next even foot and riveted the tip back on. I just have to remember that with measuring with it. I also have some that I cut into lengths and put magnets on the back of them to stick to metal. They come in useful at times also.

Years ago I tried to use one that had the first couple of inches broken off. About the time I remembered to allow for the difference, frustration at ruined projects had it in the trash. Good Riddance.
