OT: '98 Chevy 1500 WT Brake Light

When I first push on the brake pedal gently it will illuminate the brake lights, but then they go out until I press very hard, when they will come on again. Not good in traffic.
I've read a thread about another Chevy with the same problem and the advice was to change the brake light switch. The switch was changed but the problem remained. There was no reply as to a solution.
Any experience with this problem? All advice welcome.
Thanks,
Slowpoke.

On that vehicle, brake lights come on when peddle has mover downwards a little, has nothing to do with pressure.

The switch actually moves with the peddle. Makes me wonder if there's a broken wire in the harness near the switch, or one of the pins is loose, damaged, or partially crimped in one of the connectors.

IIRC, there's a connector at the switch, then a short harness, and another connector where that plugs into the main harness, lots of connections to go wrong there.

Wire broken in the jumper harness from the switch to the main harness. See it all the time on those. It will be broken right up against a terminal at the brake switch.

Sprint 6: Thanks. I suppose movement of the pedal a million time flexes the wire till it breaks.I'll look for it as soon as we have a dry day. No indoor parking!
Might as well replace he switch while I'm in there, too.
Thanks again for pinpointing the problem.

GM offered a short harness extension as a fix for
this. Replaced one on my 1999 model 1500 a few years back.
Got my info about this from a GM Chevrolet tech.
No idea if still offered by GM. good luck j
