I use Zurn pex pipe and plastic fittings. There are 2 rings that can be used both require a clamping tool. The thin ring will slide on the pipe and you must put it where you want it. The wider ring has stops on it so it only goes on so far. Both rings take a clamping tool just for it. There is one more brand of pipe called upenor (spelling}. It requires a expanding tool that you use on the pipe. There are collars that go over the pipe then you expand the pipe and then insert the fitting. Then you hold the pipe with the fitting in it in your bare hand. The heat from your hand seals the fitting. I know this sounds crazy but it works. You can also use a heat gun for a few seconds. If this pipe freezes it will expand to 1 1/2 times it normal size without splitting and when it thaws it will go back to it normal size. I hope all this helps you. Al

If you are talking about the same type of Pex plumbing that I'm familiar with, you simply cut the Pex tubing to the length you want, slip on a ring over the Pex hose and then slip in the Pex fitting into the hose. Put the ring over the Pex fitting and then use a tool that crimps the ring. At work we use mainly 1/2" and 3/4" Pex tubing and we have a separate crimper for each size.
The joke at work is that Pex made Farmers instant, expert plumbers.

Thanks for all replies, i understand the crimp but not how they crimp. With the cinch type the overall diameter of the clamp is reduced but it appears unaffected when crimping a ring type. What am i missing? Reason i am asking is i a leaking fitting.

The ring type is also reduced by the crimp tool. The rings are soft metal and tool surrounds the ring and reduces the diameter without leaving a mark on it. I use them for all my pex work from Zurn

I use Wirsbo brand pex pipe and fittings, this system uses a plastic ring with an internal shoulder, you place it onto the end of tubing, then use an expander tool to expand the tubing and ring, then you have a limited time to place the tube/ring over the end of a fitting. The tube/ring shrinks onto the fitting very firmly. I'm told this system maintains more closely to the inside diameter of the tubing.
