Invisible fence

I called customer service for a couple of companies and didn't get answers. Has anyone hung perimeter wire on livestock fence instead of burying? Would save a lot of time apposed to burying. I'd like to limit two large dogs to roam a 60 acre pasture.

Yes,SIL had his like that for a while(Two big dogs)the problem was deer and weeds. He has plowed his in three times. I think this time he finally kept it out of the driveway and the garden.

They come in with a trencher and just get it over with. My dad had a golden who would constantly go over and visit all of the neighbors. I don't think the stupid dog was worth the cost. Not cheep. As has said, deer and such breaking it. If you need to go under roads string it through a piece of 3/4 code 40 plastic pipe. The dog's name was Molly. Real dingaling.

Did invisible dog fencing for 12 years professionally.Did many like that. It worked fine and the ground hogs didn't chew through it when making their homes in the fence row.

We used the radio controlled unit. Put the collar on,turn on the box that sends out a radio signal. We haven't put it on him in 5 years or more, but he stays right here.

da.bees I have mine steel posts with hot wire for 3 years. No problems. To many trees to bury hidden fence. RB

I have a petsafe system in use for about 10 years. There should be a sensitivity adjustment on the transmitter (indoor) unit. You should buy a unit with a surge protector that protects against voltage surges in both the AC line voltage and also the area loop. I had several transmitters taken out by nearby lightning strikes, before they came out with the surge arrestor. I see no problem as far as it working when hung from the fence posts, you will just need to adjust the sensitivity. Make sure that the system you buy is rated to cover the large area you want to cover. If there is a break in the loop you will get an alarm at the transmitter.

used one for 5 years now.. they say not to bury it too deep as it will not work well... mine is 2 inches deep.. have hit it serveral times and spliced it back together... I always forget about it when tilling the garden and go too far.(oops) Have cut it when bringing the tractors back up to the barn and dropping the plow in the wrong place or forgetting to pick it up when leaving the barn. (oops)... Have about an two acres in the wired area.

have a super dumb? dog, so set it high so he gets a warning at 9 foot out or he will run through it.

as said, works well and keeps "numbnuts" home.

uried or not should make little difference. The real question is length of wire the system will support ? A 60 acre pasture would require over 4 1/2 miles of wire to encompass the pasture ..

Thanks for all the responses,I didn't think burying the wire would be required but they don't mention any other way. I'm glad to hear others had good luck with the systems. BTW jo,we use wire stretchers in Texas to make 4 miles of fence go completely around 640 acres. Thanks again friends.

ess than 2 miles, more like 1.3 miles.

Okay folks," I'll continue with "The Rest of The Story". The trouble with the question was not enough information was given, so no definitive answer is attainable, except the smallest amount of wire required to do the job.. The only in formation was, he wanted to encompass 60 Acres. No mention was given to the shape or dimensions of the area involved. The other posters used the perimeter of a square and came up with a widely acceptable answer, but question my answer using 4.8 mi., so how do I claim it may take such an extraordinary large amount of wire, simple, instead figure the area as a rectangle that is one acre wide and 60 acres long and it will take that amount of wire to encompass it's perimeter. So now let's play the game and ask whats the minimum amount of wire he will need, my answer is 1.085402 miles and if you use rounding procedures it would be a flat 1 mile...any takers on how to use less wire than that ??
Seriously people I was merely trying to point the conversation of the topic to check the length of the wire that the unit he was interested in would support. Most systems only support enough wire to contain a mere 10 to 12 acres but then, Texas, is a big place and if he wants to spend enough money on a system to cover, 60 acres, I'm sure he will be able to do so.

Is there a specific reason the dogs must have access to all 60 acres? I trained and trialed pointing dogs for 15 years. Won a lot of trials. The dogs were kept in 5x10 foot runs and exercised from horses and scooters.
Are you trying to protect livestock?

Yes,protecting livestock from four legged varmints and farmstead from two legged varmints. Pasture fence is already in place making it much faster to hang wire on posts apposed to burying less wire around smaller tree root infested area.
