I need to make some rods with 10-32 threads--What size rod do I need to use?--Thanks in advance

You can buy all thread rods in one foot and 3 foot sections. prethreaded to meet your needs....

It would take one well above average--most are only going to carry standard sizes--usually in 16ths or thereabouts. I'll second getting pre-threaded rods if possible, though there again many stores will just carry rather low-grade rod and if you need more tensile strength you'll have to get it from a specialty supplier. I like Online Metals for small quantity stuff but there's plenty of others around.

Probably are available elsewhere for a cheaper price, but Fastenal can get about any kind of threaded rod by special order.

If I figure right, 3/8th is .1875--Would that work---I need solid rod instead of all thread to make it look origional

Yes, he does (or at least, .1875 is indeed 3/16) and I think he'll find that he won't get enough thread engagement using straight 3/16" rod. He can try, and a foot or two of 3/16 rod is certainly cheap enough to be worth trying, but if his application has much need for strength I don't think he'll be happy with the results.

I would think a welding supply store would have 3/16 filler rod. Maybe steel, brass, or ss. I have used stick welding rods, just take the flux off.

in response to comments below: I just checked machinery handbook and major o.d. of 10-32 class 2A thread is 0.1831 to 0.1891. therefore 3/16 should be ideal. choice is still yours. LeRoy

I agree with Old bc, look at McMaster Carr. they will have good quality steel rod. There is a description of each steel at the beginning of the steel section. There are a lot of good choices.

Use 3/16 if you're not buying threaded stock. I've made a couple of throttle rods that way. A #10 thread is .190 major diameter. That .0025 will make no difference. Try not to use the zinc plated stuff from a hardware, it's harder to thread.
