Dextron ll atf oil

i'm taking a 1985 f 250 out of storage for a friend to use for a bit. hasn't been on the road for about 10 yrs. in changing the fluids, i find the transfer case calls out Dextron ll for fluid. from what i understand they haven't made it in a while. will Dextron 3, 4 or 5 work ok, or should i look for something else? thanks for the help.

Dexron II has been gone a long time now and Dexron III supersedes that. You should be able to find Dex III/Mercon still in stores. Dex III is an old fluid too but still around, from there it goes up to DEX VI.

Anyway, its just an old t-case that specs a fluid that doesn't exist anymore, there is nothing special in them to require a special fluid. I would get any type of ATF laying around or available in stores and it will work just fine.

If you take the time to read what is written on the bottle you will see the newer dextron replaces the older stuff and also many other types of ATF like fords F fluid

thats' what i would do if i were going to town. but as my daughter is coming out, and bringing the oil, i wanted to be able to identify the oil a little better for her. thanks for the help.

The new dextron 4 or 5 from what I have read is a universal ATF and takes the place of just about every type that was ever made

This might explain it a bit.

If I under this correctly 88861800 now called manual trans fluid is really Dexron 3.
