Any big reason not to use 3, 12V, batteries instead of 6,6V in the golf cart. It is used for tractor shows and running around here. I know I will loose some range, but that is all I can think of.

Does the cart have Headlights / Taillights; I know some do, some don't. What do you have for an onboard charging system, Alternator or Generator? Making the battery change is easy, it's all these other little things you have to think about.

Hope it works out for you.

Neighbor has one and did that. Just affects the range. If you are not going off road or driving to town, shouldn't be a problem.

We have an old EZ Go, needs batteries and the charger doesn't work. Three hundred dollars at least for a charger (I checked at a golf cart place) I was thinking the same as you, 3 twelves, but then charging them??? Have to disconnect them and charge separately with a regular charger? Or could you charge 3 of them hooked together? One thing with 3 twelves, you'd save half the battery weight.

Sure, three twelves add up to the correct 36 volts to power the cart, its just that (subject to battery Amp Hour ratings) you may or may not have as much stored energy IE less run time. IT DEPENDS ON BATTERY RATINGS

Remember in series while the battery voltage is additive, Amp Hours IS NOT additive.
Remember with two same voltage batteries in parallel, voltage is the same, but Amp Hours IS additive

I don't see why you couldn't charge them with 3 chargers and not disconnect wires.

I've seen many golf cart chargers that could be repaired. Many times I've bypassed the brains on the charger and turned it into a manual charger. Then tell the people to put charger on a timer.

Bottom line, all devices with batteries will sooner or later have battery failure. Trying us use different batteries from what the engineers designed it for is a formula for batteries failing sooner than later.

I know of a golf course that got rid of all battery golf carts and went with gas.

Every trip I make to Florida to visit sisters, I get stuck repairing golf carts. I'll never own one, too problematic.

I bought 8 6 volt golf cart batteries at Sam's club this summer for $84 apiece (my rig is 48 volt). A large deep cycle 12 volt at wally world was around $150 each and I would have had to re-engineer my batteries trays to make them fit. Got a whole boat load more amp hours for a few extra bucks. For gtractorfan; go online for a 36 volt charger. My 48 volt was less than $100 and has been working perfectly for 9 years.

I have an old Golf cart (1980ish) used for 6 years like you do. Put 3 heavy duty 12 volts in it. About 3 years on a set of batteries. Works for me.

I once owned an ezgo 36 volt and i installed 3 gel filled 12 volt batteries which was intended for a uninterrupted power system. Ran them for years no problem and best of all, no boil over mess. Cart charger unaffected however on occassion i would connect a 12 volt charget to insure complete charging.

I should add, I have a set of 4 12 volt batteries in the tool box that are switched inside so I can run and charge each bank separately. These batteries are also 9 years old, but have only been in the truck for 5 years. They are, however, Trojan J185H-AC batteries and run around $300 each.

Thanks guys. I just run it around the camp grounds and here on the home place, head lights only. I would switch it over to Lithium but $1500.00 is way too much for the use I will get out of it. Yes you can charge a 36V system, 12V at a time. The biggest reason I want to go with 12V is weight. My camper is not really designed to haul all of that lead. It was built to haul a couple of dirt bikes.

I may have an old Lester brand cart charger that will work. I have a couple that the case was beat up but worked and maybe the timer wouldn't shut off always but still charged good. Maybe we could work something out....heavy to ship though. email open
