Re: Trailers a tool I hope

I had a thought to make a plate to cover the differential hole then a candle came on. I am now thinking to mount a couple pillow blocks inside for the inner ends of the axle shafts to stabilize in. Closest I come to spline diameter is a 1.25 I.D. bearing, the splines measure 1.21" or use 1.1875 and cut the splines down. Any thoughts. Tom

center grinding the splines is best. (retains concenticity) Putting pillow blocks in is just fine, but they need to be very
aligned with the carrier bearing centerline. I would make the plate fit the banjo, then use the removed carrier on a surface
plate to set bearing location and height. Unless they are concentric within .005" or less, the bearings on the outer axle
will fail.
Another option might be to put a piece of tubing over one axle and weld it on straight. this tube would extend at least a foot over the axle and be machined to fit the spline. It would slide over the other axle for the same distance and make them be aligned and centered with no need for centered bearings. Pack it full of grease and it would last a lifetime, allowing one axle to turn in the other welded sleeve. Jim

Sounds like you are trying to make a pickup bed into a trailer.

Not sure it would work; but if I ever tried to do this I would at least look into removing the axles and trying to install a dead axle bearing like is used on the rear wheels of a front wheel drive car to the axle housing.

Just remove the pinion gear and it's bearings. Make two washers to fit the hole, one inside, one outside, put a bolt through the washers with sealant. Leave the ring gear
to throw oil.

3/4 ton pickup axles use full floating wheel bearings and have larger brakes than 1/2 ton axles. Would a 3/4 ton axle work as a trailer axle if the differential, pinion carrier and both axle shafts were removed and sheet metal covers fitted over the holes?
