What would cause oil to leak out of this hole?

It appears to be an oil pressure operated "unloader" that vents air stuck between the compressor and tank check valve at shutdown, making for a much easier "start".

There's either a diaphragm in there that's sprung a leak or a little piston on which sealing rings have failed.

Also make sure you have the oil level at the correct mark. Some have a dip stick, some you fill to the top, and some you fill to the BOTTOM of the threaded hole where that dip stick goes. I have all three. Also follow what the others have suggested.
