Trailers a tool I hope

I have a beat up old 67-72 ford 100 box with the 9 inch axle under it. Would like to make it road worthy with out spending a lot of dollars on the axle. Don't like the idea of the pinion shaft spinning around gathering grass and net wrap, waiting for that perfect moment to lock up on the highway.
I would like to keep the ford pickup bolt pattern because I must have ten or fifteen extra wheels. One spare could serve both puller and trailer.
What can I do with the existing housing and axle shafts to use them, I am trying to come up with an inboard bearing but can't visualize a way to make it work.
These axles are old enough they use the sealed bearing on the shaft.
Thanks Tom

Not hard to stop that shaft from spinning by removing the ring gear or the spider gears

Something to think about. Where I live any trailer with plates more than 3k
need to have brakes.

I used to have an old international 4x8 ft bed. The axle was removed and a
square axle put under it. Great little trailer. Bed rusted out and I gave it to
a farmer who needed the axle.

The only issue is to put the preload shims/adjustment back where they were. The inner axle bearings are good to go. Taking it apart is easy, just be careful on reassembly. Jim

I don't think a person can take out the ring gear or pinion without taking the carrier out! it could be unbolted and cut in half, but that would leave nasty grit or slag in the banjo. Jim

Pull the U joint off the pinion shaft, torch and grind it smooth so nothing will hook on it, and reinstall.

Take a steel sleeve or pipe and weld it to the rear end casting, over the spinning part. Cap the end. Sort of like the pto cover on JD tractors.

I have removed the ring gear in some and or the smaller spider gears. With the ring gear remove for the spider gear cage the pinion gear cannot turn any more but takes a lot more work then just pulling the spider gear shaft and removing the small 2 gears leaving the gears on the axle shafts

Depending on your state you might have to weld a serial number into to frame to get title and plates and as said if you plate it over 3,000
lbs you need brakes.

I have a trailer made out of a '68 Ford F100. Also have two made out of Chevys, and another made out of a Mazda. Been dragging them around for years and never had anything wrap on the drive yoke.

Well Guys I have the third member out. I was hoping to leave out forever. Besides its a 3.28 was hoping to use it in my 68. That 300 screams plenty loud at 75.

Old; If there is no other way and I pull the pinion shaft what keeps those side gears from moving over and falling off or doing some damage.

Jim; I had thought of just leaving the spool in there but again the inner ends are just kinda flailing away only in a smaller circle. And you still have to fill it with gear oil. Something else I am trying to stay away from.

And here in Kansas you used to be able to buy 5 or 6000 lbs. car toters with no brakes or a least they were an option. I would use this with great discretion on the highway. No interstates for miles and miles. Tom

I wouldn't worry it won't wrap up any
more than the tow vehicles pinion will.
And you can't leave the center section
out it's what holds the inner end of the
axle
