Homelite chainsaw Followup Bob Bancroft

Sorry it took so long to do this follow up. This is in reference to a question about fuel cap vents I had on XL12 and Super XLAO Home light chain saw. The duck bill vents came in last week and I just today took the time to see if they would work. As Bob said the vent or what was left of it was behind the brass filter in the red colored cap. Really just a sticky mess but it cleaned out ok. The new one fit just fine and seems to be ok, time will tell. I also have another saw with a black cap that does not seem to have the same exposed brass filter in the cap. In looking at it and several other brands of caps I have I come to the conclusion that it went in the center inside of the cap like some of the others I have. I scrounged through some of my excess inventory and found one with the star washer needed to hold the vent on place, I used with a new duck bill and it seem ok as well. It had me fooled as you could not see any air passages inside the cap where it mounted. Thanks again Bob Bancroft.

Yes, the earlier hard plastic (or whatever it is) caps Homelite used had the breather in the center. These were the caps with the "hand grip". The down fall of that design was tiny breather holes which could plug. The later softer plastic ones (hex) had it in the side under the brass plug.
I'm glad I can remember a little. It's getting close to 40 years ago!

can see how they could plug easily. The original gasket was cracked and leaking as well. I simply cut a new one out of gasket paper and did not realize until today that I had almost blocked it off all the way. I had put it over the old cork gasket that fit down in the relief in the cap. I have since modified it. Will test it for leaks later. Thanks again.
