Does anyone here have the means to engrave a name onto a piece of aluminum I have ? The letters would be maybe 1/2 - 5/8" high , block letters somewhat deeply machined in. I could mail the work piece to you.

If you're piece is not huge.....take it to anyone who fabricates trophys for sports wins. Socker, bowling, cars, etc. They have table engravers. All different styles and sizes.

Years ago when I was taking a college class the prof. wanted all of us to make name tags for our desk so he did not have to remember our names till he had use in class for a while. I took a piece of aluminum and bent it in half and tig welded my name on it so it said Rich on it. He liked it so much that when the class ended he asked me if he could keep it and I sad sure

If you have a bead blast cabinet you can do it yourself. Just cover the whole piece with 2 layers of duct tape in a crisscross pattern and then cut out the letters with an exacto knife. Blast it at a 90 deg. angle with glass beads at about 70 PSI. The beads will just bounce off the duct tape and it will leave a surprisingly crisp edge on the letters. This can also be done on glass to make designs like they are acid etched. I recently did a piece of plate glass that I made the designs countersunk about an 1/8"

It is easy to electro-etch Aluminum. Kinda like reverse electrolysis. Mask off the part you don't want to etch and use a battery charger and a vinegar/salt/water solution to act as a transfer medium.

Attached is a video of one way of doing this. You can also do by immersion in solution with a sacrificial cathode.

I have a friend who uses nail polish as a mask and then burns the pattern into the nail polish with a laser engraver. He then electro-etches the metal by immersion in a tank with a battery charger for about 3 minutes. Works in steel and aluminum.

That was before you got old?

Thanks for the link to the youtube videos . I have acid and I have duct tape and bead blaster . I think I'm going to blast it in.
