I have a lot of desk top icons. Many are documents etc that could be deleted that I just put there while emailing etc. How come I'll just wake up the PC and one will be moved? None are gone. None are added. Just one shifted around. Happened a bit the last few days. Will go months without moving then happens. Its usually one like this one that I use often.

do you have cats or kids that can get a hold of the mouse or keyboard?...Might even be you if you go to open it you might click and drag it and not notice till go back to it after your mind resets before going back to computer....or even just a mind trick with so many your mind might make you think it moved, though in same place, being the mind gets confused where exactly it was in relation to other icons.
Lots of things.
click and drag, (accidental or on purpose)
set to grid setting,
auto arrange setting,
any update that causes the screen resolution to change, even if its momentarily during a video driver update.
Unplugging the monitor cable and replugging can trip it.
any video resolution or scaling or setting being changed.

I've had computer viruses do that before. My son said the virus was jacking with the resolution causing the icons to be re-arranged.

Screen resolution changes will cause it. For my work laptop I have three possible monitor configurations. The docking station at work has two monitors, the docking station at home has one monitor, and the laptop by itself with no external monitors. My icons move around all the time.
