Blackening Brass

I have made some replacement handles for an antique cedar wardrobe . I fashioned them from scrap plate and rod brass they look almost identical but are far too shiny .

Does anyone know of a chemical process to darken new brass ?

Anything that knocks the shine off and creates that aged bronze look would be brilliant .

Use selenium dioxide to darken copper or brass. I also read that salt water and vinegar will also blacken it.

I've blackened steel parts by brushing used engine oil on en going over it with a propane torch. Repetitive applications gives darker shade of black. For decorative purposes it holds very well over time.
Would try it on a piece of scrap first though and do it outside ...

ears ago I saw a magazine article about antique repairs, they gave new brass a patina by suspending it in a jar above a strong ammonia solution. Only the vapors touch the brass NOT the liquid. Do not trust my memory but it seems like it was 27% ammonia solution----much stronger than household stuff.

If you look for a place that sells reproduction hardware they will sell a brass darkening solution. Depending on how dark you want you might have to soak it for quite a while. The longer it soaks the darker it will get. http://www.vandykes.com/product.aspx?p=225726

Thanks very much for the suggestions, great advice ! . Looks like I will have a few experiments to undertake in the shed .
At least now I know I can cover the shiny brass parts effectively . I will post some result photos when I'm done . :)
