well pressure tank

Was a discussion the other day about a well bladder tank a fellow cut it and saw it rusted. I wonder if that is why my water seems to leave more rusty stains than it used to ? My tank is 19 years old. a well x troll brand. Anyone use a fiberglass tank ? Wonder if they hold up ?
I know my hot water tank has a plastic lining in it from back when I cleaned ALOT of white deposits from inside of it.
I'm wondering if I should just replace it ? Otherwise it is working good for now but I'm sure on borrowed time.

Those Amtrol well-x-troll tanks are about the best out there that I know of and the reason it has lasted you 19 years. It certainly could be a source of rust in your system so could be your water heater or any galvanized pipes in your water system.

Anything coming from the tank would be insignificant compared to what comes out of the ground. Most likely you just have some of the water coming to your well is coming through iron bearing rock or gravel, when it did not before. Just put a two cartridge dirt and rust filter in line.

Well casing is plastic but I don't know what the submersible pump is hook to ? I assume plastic but I do not know.

In a bladder tank the water is in the bladder and air is in the rest of it. So rust on the inside of the tank would have no bearing on your water. TDF

Mike, I have a deep well, iron casing, 5 or 6 inch. I bleach The well. Bleach turns water into what looks like tea. Bleach Removed The rust.

On the one tank that I took apart the water was in the bladder, no way for it to get rusty, but some are designed different. On that one you could replace the bladder, don't see many like that, came from Sears.

Hum ? I cannot see bleach removing rust. Maybe it is some sort of bacteria that looks like rust ?

Last one I had apart the water was in the bladder, that keeps the tank for rusting.
If the pump is hung on steel pipe, even galvanized, it will rust over time, but most rust one sees comes from the well when water travels through rock with iron in it.

I thought you put air into the bladder like you would a tire. The tank has a place on the top of tank to put air in, then you fill tank up with water & adjust cut off & cut on with pressure switch.

Hello PJH,

Nothing to learn, bladder is on top water is on the bottom. Wellxtrol videos on you tube from the OEM,

Guido.

Mike,
Chlorine is an oxidizer. Try it. It cleaned out my well. Besides I was told if you have a well one should bleach it at least once a year to kill bacteria. I think I read you dump bleach down the well while running a garden hose. When you smell bleach coming out hose, let it sit for a while to clean hose. Then circulate bleach water back to well washing down the sides of well. Then add another gallon of bleach while hot water faucets in house are running. Shut off faucets when you smell bleach. Then flush out cold water lines same way.Allow bleach to sit as long as possible. Then turn everything on and flush all crap out of system. Then tell me if you don't see rust when flushing.
There may be other suggest a better way for a bleach flush.

I heard similar time frame and method from others too. I never did it because all is working and seems water has not made us sick ? I do not want to cause a problem either by stirring things up.
