Loud water heater

I just got a call from one of my tenants that the water heater has a high pitched noise coming from it. What the heck could it be? BTW it's electric and only two years old.

Could be the hi temp/pressure valve trying to release. Check for water discharge on that valve. Many are piped to a drain or out side.

That's what I thought but she said it
stopped as soon as she shut the power off
last night. This morning it started as soon
as power was turned on and water running so
should not have built enough pressure.

It may be a problem with the heating element. Although I don't how. Have you had problems with excess build up from the water in past heaters. Unhook the bottom element and turn on to see if the problem has gone away.

Hi, I wouldn't wait too long to check it out. It probably has warranty on it. You may have to switch it out but what PITA. Ed Will Oliver BC

Wild guess.....scale on the heating element isolates element from adequate water contact allowing what water that does contact to boil off at a rapid rate, hence squeal. Might check the tap for scale buildup. We are supposed to flush the heaters periodically where high mineral deposits are prevelant.....like here it's Alkali and will eat up the rod in just a few years. I get 6 years give or take a few months on gas heaters even with proper servicing.

I was thinking same. our water is real high in lime...were real close to the limestone capital of the word.

Improper heat to water transfer is my first thought. Foreign material in and or on heating element?

Bob..

Some people will tell you to reverse the wires on the element. Have read it on here a lot of times. Could also be a defective element. Cheep enough to change. Let us know.

Went to ace at lunch and got a new element. Never heard of switching wires. guess I can try. The good news is this house is at the end of my farm so wont have to go far to mess with it. Just glad I have not had any frozen pipe calls yet.

It is as simple as the element is going bad, the outside is most likely broke open and letting the water hit the wire inside, won't last much longer, could go a couple months though. And then most have two so prepare for that.

I should add, when you go to take out the old one it will have spread out and and will come out kind of hard.

"I was thinking same. our water is real high in lime...were real close to the limestone capital of the word.'

Replace the standard element with what I believe is called a low density element which has nearly twice the surface area of a std element and will stand a lot more lime build up before failing.

When does it make the noise? When water is being drawn or when it's heating water? Noise when water is drawn indicates sediment in the tank. Noise when heating is a bad element.

It's just a characteristic of that particular element. I install a bunch if Bradford white water heaters every year and it seems to happen in the 2nd-3rd year. Most of the time it's not an issue. I did have a customer with the water heater installed in the attic over the Master bedroom. The "whistling" Taiwanese upper element was working fine, looked fine and ohm'ed out perfect. I changed it to a Mexican manufactured element and so far no issues.
