What is it?

A friend asked me if I knew what this was. I don't even have a guess. She said there were dozens of them, similar but in different sizes and diameters, and said it's very light.

They are thread spools from a factory weaving loom. I see them often at yard sales and flea markets.

Rossow got it. From textile mills. They were real popular among the "antiquers" about thirty years ago. We have a couple on the mantle.

They are called bobbins. Very very old Singer treadle machines have a miniature of that thing. About the size of a glass fuse like in an older car fuse pannel.
