Millermatic 210 feed failure

About all I can find on the net is clean the drive motor and hope it kicks back on. Called Miller and tech said motor or board. Kinda got spoiled by the MIG and arc welder needs hooking up to finish a project. Gas comes on , solenoid ,and drive rollers jerk slightly but no feed of wire. ?

Worked with millers in factory setting most of the feed failures were due to trigger or liner wear. have you replaced the tip?

Yes I tried it with the tip off. Every third trigger pull the drive roller will jerk a 1/4 inch forward then stop again. Fairly new liner.

Also could be drive motor brushes. Also open feed rollers and see if motor will start with no load from the wire. The should be a reset button for the drive motor. On my 250 the brushes can be removed externally, make sure brushes move freely in the brush holders. Jim

The more I think about it I bet it is the brushed since pulling on wire seemed to try to help. Picture of brushes on 250

Locate the motor leads, put your volt meter across the leads. It is probably DC, but unless the motor is labeled, try AC setting also.

This will tell if it's the motor or the board.

Also ohm out the wire speed selector potentiometer.

Sounds like what happened to my Millermatic 200 twenty years ago. If I remember correctly the contacts in the solenoid operated by the trigger needed filing.

Over a year ago I had trouble with the wire feed on my little Century 110 welder, would start to advance and stop or be jerky, had it apart several times. Finally took a magnifying glass to the circuit board and found 2 cracks in the connection to the speed control potentiometer. Soldered both spots an it works good now.

I believe the 210 is electronic and doesn't have those contactors. Thise went bad in my Vintage and cost a bundle to replace.

Do the rollers turn with out the wire? How old is the wire? We had trouble with the wire getting getting a lite rust you can't see on it and it would feed off and on. Also found a cleaning pad the welding supply turn me on to it. But still had to get new roll of wire.If you don't weld a lot it help to get a small roll of wire so you use it up faster. We also make sure you cover it back up with plastic bag between use.

Dr Sportster, Check the wire speed selector potentiometer I have some wire welders that had corroded and lose their contact.Move it back and forth briskly many times to clean corrosion from the contacts. You might even try to get some contact cleaner spray in it or remove and soak it awhile.

If the drive works but does not feed the wire then start looking at rusty wire(you are checking everything else already.)

Let us know what you find out. I also got thinking our old Millermatic 200 from years back had a ceramic fuse that protected the motor instead of a reset like the 250 does. Not sure what your 210 uses.

(quoted from post at 19:44:00 01/08/17) If the drive works but does not feed the wire then start looking at rusty wire(you are checking everything else already.)

Also look at the hose/tube.. if its been yanked on, it will pull out of the machine,, just a bit... and all the feed wire will simply bunch up in the machine, instead of going into the tube.

loosen up the tube nut, push the tube all the way back into the machine so that it seats.. tighten it up.. and it will feed well ..
