Electrical Problem.

Couple of years ago my son bought a large garage with what looks to be a fairly new air compressor in it that has never worked.. Finally decided to take a look at it. Visual inspection showed a bad start capacitor. Replaced it and it started and ran with a lot of sparks from the internal starter switch. Took it apart and found the seal on the shaft bearing was bad and had been allowing grease to get on the starter switch and melt the points. Its a Century motor and I have no problem finding the bearing, but I cant find the starter switch on the net. Maybe I'm calling it by the wrong name because all I can find are what I call contactors. Any one know where I can find the switch that goes inside the motor.?

google 'century motor start switch'. lots of links. here's one:

I always called the switch an end switch because it's located at the end of the shaft.

If you can't find the end switch you need, there are electronic relays you can use. Only problem is solid state relay has to cool off a while before they will restart.

Try looking for a centrifical start switch and see what you find, for obsolete motors I have also used a timing relay to drop the start windings

Good luck.

If you buy a new motor, make sure it is rated for an air compressor. They don't last long if they aren't.

Dave, Have you even been to Thering's in Oneonta? They might have it. They are between Otsego Iron and Metal and Latham Homes. They are in the phone book under electric motor repair. I had greased the motor too much on the barn cleaner unit and had the switch stick open years ago.
