Is a typewriter a tool?

My boy, an IT security analysis, wanted a manual typewriter. I found him a 1909 Underwood No5 in great shape. He wants on special occasions to send typed personalized letters instead of emails.

He thinks it's amazing, best Christmas gift ever.

Honestly, its a work of art. I have a couple, and both look as nice as yours here. Love your post

My boy not only thinks it's a work of art, he thinks it built like a tank. He is simply amazed!

Actually they probably can be hacked. It just takes someone smart enough. You may be old enough to remember how the Russians were hacking the American IBM Selectric 'Typeball' (pre-memory) electric typewriters back during the Cold War in the early 60's.

Really looks to be in pristeen condition. Reminds me of the Royals we had in high school typing class. That class was probably the best one I ever took. Got the resources to work today's computers and got a wife of 49 ? years out of the deal......I needed a date for the Senior Prom. I was coming from the class going down the stairs and she was coming up the stairs to attend the class.........the rest is history. She passed on in 2010-heart attack.

sure it's a tool and a very nice one too. I have a Smith Corona, not as old and it needs cleaning and a ribbon. I used to use it before I got a computer. Been thinking of using it again some. It's great your son can see the quality in that typewriter.

I graduated in 67. Back then there were few boys on typing. Mostly girls . I've used typing more than I ever imagined I would. Very helpful. Better than most typest that type with two fingetd, Hunt and Peckers. Quit a few of those in my typing class.

Youngest Daughter is 21 and has three typewriters, one we got her about 5 years ago was a Smith Corona Air Writer, as we were cleaning out one of my Mom's sheds after her death the Daughter finds and old Olympia portable and claimed it. This Christmas she got another Smith Corona portable that happened to have belonged to one of the long time instructors from her college, the instructor is in her 90's and still seen at various school events. This was the typewriter the instructor used when she spent 10 years in Japan. But then the youngest Daughter is a history major and appreciates the history behind some of the older technology. It was kind of neat she did an internship at a WW II POW camp Museum last summer and was having a lot of fun researching the various uniforms they had in the museum and setting up correct displays for them. Made me wish her Granddad's WWII AAC uniform was still around as we would of donated it to see it preserved.
