Oh No, electrical problem

Went to get a second cup of coffee. Bunn coffee maker's light went out. Coffee is cold. I Checked, it has power. I thought I had all my Christmas shopping done. Hate the idea of fighting the Christmas crowd to buy a new coffee maker. If I can't fix it, I'll just go to my other place and pick up coffee maker. Not that many things in coffee maker to go wrong, power switch and two thermal fuses will be the first things I check for

Maybe someone will have an after Christmas special on Bunns.

time to go to work.

Merry Christmas neighbor, when we are dry camping in the RV (or say power outage at home) and don't want to use the onboard generator in the morning to power the conventional elec coffee maker, we get out the old blue campfire percolator (looks like John Wayne used) and let er cook till she percs mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmm good coffee. At one bluegrsss fest a buddy gets out his HUGEEEEEEE old percolator and places coffee in a sock inside and puts it over the campfire mmmmmmm mmmmmm good and STRONG lol

HEY those coffee percolators DO NOT have a Ground or Neutral wire, cant be OSHS approved I bet lol

Merry Christmas

Think I saw them in Rural King yesterday for $99...don't shoot me if I'm wrong.

Fred

Just looked at their ad, $99 through today

I am with ya on not going to town today, , last night it was nuts and we got out a there as quickly as possible

JohnT,
Merry Christmas to you too.

Planning to do a little fishing soon, Leesburg, Fl where my two sisters live. Then planning a trip to the keys.

My Idea of dry camping is sleeping in a dry bed.

From 1971 to 1979 BC, the wife and I would load up the car with tent, camping gear and drive. Some times North, South, east or west. Stop where we could place to pitch a tent, use coleman white gas grill to cook on. BYW, 1971-1979 BC (Before Children). That all ended after the kids showed up. Now I'm older, I can force myself to camp at the Holiday Inn, sit in front of their fire place, drink their complematry coffee and eat a donut.

I removed 6 screws on coffee pot and found two 141 degree C thermal fuses in series. One thermal fuse was open. If Radio Shack hadn't gone out of business, I could have gone to town and picked one up for around a buck. I may have to order one off eBay or amazon. In the mean time I'll short out the defective fuse and use the good one. Both thermal fuses are in series, but located right next to each other, redundant don't you think? Some coffee makers use two thermal fuses located in different places.

Have fun. Merry Christmas,
George

Fred,
Rural King is were I've bought my last two Bunns from many years ago for $99. I discovered I need a thermal fuse to fix mine. If I have to buy a new one it will be from Rural King.
MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Leesburg, I think that's where Paquets Farmall Museum is located, if you haven't already check it out. I'm not to far south of there in the Avon Park Sebring area...................

JohnT,
I've heard of the museum, been too busy fishing to go see. How much longer are you going to be in Florida?

George,

I had a part-time job as an accountant for a small business. I worked for them for nine years. One day last February, 2 of the 3 owners called the employees together and informed us that the business was closing about two weeks later. It did. No severance packages. Nothing like that. However, they were going to throw a Keurig coffee maker away that they had just bought a couple of months earlier. They gave me the coffee maker. I love that thing. It costs about $.30 per cup of coffee, but it's quick, convenient, and tasty.

Have you ever tried a Keurig?

So the warmer isn't working. No big deal as long the the tank heats up; as I recall Bunns use separate circuits for the tank heater and carafe warmer. Just brew your coffee as usual, then sit the carafe on the stove.

Mark,

I removed 6 screws and found two 141 C thermal fuses in series. The one on right was open. I ordered 5 thermal fuses off eBay $6. In mean time I removed bad fuse. Soldered wires together. Temporary fix. Will only plug pot in while I'm in the kitchen. Can't see danger in using one fuse. Both fuses were located side by side. Both attached to top of water tank.
Merry Christmas

George,

I wonder if the redundant fuse is intended as a spare? So the machine can be quickly returned to service without ordering a replacement part.

Definitely redundant. Have 5 ordered, should get them in a week or so. Easy to replace. Cheap to.

Mark,
It just hit me. Why didn't anyone say 141 degrees C is 285.8 degrees F? That is if I did my math right.

Their is no way the water tank got that hot. All the water in the tank would have been converted to steam before the temp could exceed 100C.

When I get the new part, I'll check numbers again. Usually the color of the thermofuse determines the temp rating.

Possible the fuse blew because of current instead of temp. Replacement fuses will be 15 amp.

Usually when I have a mysterious electrical problem it turns out to be a short in the neutral. Just always check for power and scratch my head. Then after numerous tests try the neutral last.

> All the water in the tank would have been converted to steam before the temp could exceed 100C.

Correct. The thermal fuse is there the protect the machine (and the kitchen it's in) in the case where the tank runs dry. Presumably the fuse will blow before the plastic melts into your countertop.

Mark,
Do you see my point? One of the 141C thermofuse opened. No way did it run out of water. No way did it get to 141 C. My theory is it's a bad 10 year old fuse or it blew because it may have been a 10 amp fuse and current may have taken it out. I ordered 15 amp 141C fuses. geo

Thanks guys on how to repair the Bunn coffee maker.
I've had three Bunn coffee makers (in twenty years), and I love them, but when they have failed I find the open thermos fuse and just replace the maker. Now I will know how to repair the open fuse.
