Adirondack case guy

I have been fabing up the 2 post canopy for my Case 831C. I have only a bit over 9' of ceiling heidth, so I couldn't just lift the frame up with the cherry picker and set it on.
I built a lifting gig that lifted it and also controlled the angle of dangle with a ratchet strap. It worked perfectly to set the upright strut onto the axle. I temperarly camped it fast with some 1/2" bolts to make measurments for the roof assy. Still need to fab up the bottom brackets out of the same channel iron that is welded to the bottom of the struts. I will use 8 3/4 bolts to secure the strut to the tractor.
When seated on the tractor, I will have 11" of clearance over my head. The roof assy will be fabed from 16G sheet stock and reinforced with a 2x2"x.188" tubeing frame work.

Neat. So the fender mounts don't change, just get raised a fraction of an inch.
When I put an OEM roll guard on my JD 2520, the fender mount brackets were discarded and the fenders bolted right to the upright of the roll guard. No possibility for any adjustment after that.

Loren, I need a new canopy for my Kubota, so I looked with interest at what you plan for your roof. My canopy has 4x4 tube beams for supports. Will you put creases or something in the sheet steel to keep the thunder down? Or will you have a bunch of 2x2 cross pieces?

going to have a noise from the steel top...this is why almost all tractor companies use plastic or fiberglass...I know I made one from metal for a 2020...my 401 b, I used 3/4 treated plywood..might not look as good but no noise....

Mind if I throw in an idea? Look into tops for Golf Cars for your canopy top. Not sure if the dimensions will match but worth a check if you have a cart repair place around. For some reason they seem to accumulate on them. Good solid formed plastic or resin tops about the right size for that roll bar from looking at the pictures. I bought several and made a longer than stock top for my oversized golf cart/ utility buggy. Nice tops and about Case cream color to boot!Seems like I paid 10 bucks each for them.
Nice project! Enjoy!

I plan to shoot the underside of the canopy with automotive undercoating, and when it is dry, I will paint it desert sunset. That shoud deaden the sound from the roof. I'm sure the support struts will still act like tuneing forks though.

Look into some "boom mat" or "hush mat" for the underside of the canopy. Plain old undercoating won't cut it.

The stuff I'm talking about is peel and stick stuff that they put in the floors of cars to deaden road noise.

You shouldn't need to coat the entire underside of the canopy with the stuff, just about 1' square.

Chris, I did something similar to that to build the cab for my 440 a couple years back. We had a large Cub Cadet dealer that retired and at his retirement auction, I bought a new in the box 4 post ROPS structure for a CC side-by-side. A little pondering and fabing and it all came together. I even recut salvaged laminated safty glass.

I have some left over sheets of foam insulation board. Silver foil on one side, about 1/2" thick. I have been thinking about cutting a piece and fastening it up in the canopy on my 4020 to see if it would make a difference on the sound. Anyone ever try something like that?

Don't waste your time with the foam insulation board. Ben there done that, it doesn't work at all. Listen to Barnyard. One day I plan to put the Hush Mat under my John Deere Canopy's. The way I understand their system it is a harder foam (mass) and then a softer foam (noise absorption) which makes a lot of sense to me. It is a little spendy but I am pretty certain it will yield a good result.

ACG ??

you still gotta do final assembly outside right... door and the beam seem to be too low to me..

BTW... really nice fab work... I love to see a well designed/executed plan... Case should have made these !

Like Paul says, what you need primarily is mass to reduce the vibration, then add a little insulation to reduce the travel of the sound.

Loren, I have searched and searched for spray on type automotive undercoating that has some mass to it for a current project but no real success so far. What are you planning o use?

jnoiolen, Yes the structure is too high to back it out of my shop. It will have to be removed and then be reassembled. I have all my measurments with it attached to build the roof structure and I will fab that up with the 2 post struts setting on my shop floor. Stay tuned

Thanks very much for taking and posting all the photos of this project. It made it much easier to understand what you were trying to do, and your method of solving the problem. I really enjoy looking at someone's clever way to get something done with a minimal investment. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.
