Veterans discount

I was in Home Depot yesterday buying a small item, and gave the cashier my veterans card[I'm a Korean war vet] and she said 'oh, we can't take that card, it has to be a disabled vet card. Your card doesn't qualify'] Strange, since I have been in there buying at least twenty times previously and they always took my card and gave me the 10% discount. Cashier said others just goofed giving me the discount. Menards is just a couple blocks away and they seem to have their 11% rebate almost constantly. Guess I'll shop there.

I was in Home Depot in Overland Park Ks Nov 26th, and they gave me the discount when I showed my VA card.

Up until about two years ago, Home Depot gave me a 10% discount on everything, just had to show proof of service. My Department of Veteran's Affairs card sufficed. Nothing said about disabled, although I'm rated at 40%. I even got 10% off on a $2000 mower that was already on sale with $1000 off the original price.

Then a couple of years ago, HD eliminated the discount on everything but few small odd items. I found out the hard way when I got 89 cents off of a $200 purchase. If you ask, they have a sheet showing what qualifies for a discount. Not very many items, and not items you routinely purchase. Plus, their checkout people seem to think the discount comes out of THEIR pocket.

Lowes still has a 10% veteran's discount, straight across the board. We got 10% off of a washer and dryer that were already on sale last summer. If you have a Lowes store nearby, you might check them out.

I've found out sometimes Menard's regular prices are about the same as Lowe's or HD after the discount. Sometimes it pays to play around.

Actually, I think a lot of it is up to the individual store, and even down to particular clerks.

Never had a problem at HD or Lowes with discount , we have plenty of vets around , so checkers all know about discount
only thing is ,only one spot for disabled vets to park at HD and none at Lowes not the regular disable spots

A couple of years ago I inquired at Lowes about the discount and was told you had to be active duty, disabled (I think), or it had to be veterans day. I am a veteran, honorable discharge in 1974.

My uncle got a estimate from Lowe's and HD, HD had the best price Lowe's matched it and gave a 10% discount off that price plus 10% Veterans with his card. I have been with him many a time its EZ as pie for him no hassle what so ever.

Back in the summer the same deal with a storm door. He is pert-neer blind he installed it himself with the help of a grandson. It did not work good because it was not installed proper (square)

I drove him to lowes they sold him another door gave him a extra 10% military discount sent there installer out he installed it for FREE and gave him a full refund for the original door once it was returned.

I have had my own issues with Lowe's and had to work at them to clean them up. In my uncles case they have went out of their way far far beyond a reasonable solution to the problem even when it was EZ to wiggle out of it. They were not at fraught for a sloppy instillation...

My hats off to'em.

Hello jimdril,

Same thing happened to me last week. First I was told only on Holidays, I was too soon holiday shopping? Then last time same song as you. I went to Lowes they matched the price, Lowes was $10 more and they beat it by 10% to boot. They will beat any price by 10% for the same item.
They were trying to give me the 10% military discount on top of that, but the computer was not taking it. There were 4 people helping me. The salesman, the manager who authorized the discount, the courtesy desk associate and the associate' manager all trying to get me the extra 10% military discount. I said I was happy with the 20% discount. I had told Homly Depot I was going to Lowes!

Hello Hobo SC,

I got a $200 credit just because they (LOWES) had to come twice to deliver my deck material and replace some bad boards. My hats off to them!

Hello Goose,

YEAP! Each store makes their own rules. But I found out that a family member(SAME LAST NAME) is with you they will get the discount as long as you are with them, Good to know,

Guido.

Home Depot and Lowe's are the same distance from me, just across from one another in fact. I go to Lowe's every time just because of the discount. During the third quarter Discover card had a 5% cashback off building materials. So on top of the 10% at Lowe's I got the extra 5% cashback too. Now that may not sound like much, but I finished up a building project during that time, plus stockpiled around $3000 worth of material for the next project, so it does make a difference. Especially to a poor, broke, and on SS old fork(sp). Also, much of the material is the exact same stuff at each store. Much of what I bought was sheet goods, and it was exactly the same from the same mill. Same with a lot of the hardware and tools.

A couple of years back, Lowe's would always give me the 10% veteran discount on the basis of the laminated DD 214 card (discharge document) I carry with me for that purpose. The print on it is practically microscopic, but just showing it was always enough. Home Depot was hit or miss about it. When my wife stained our new fence two years ago, H.D. had the brand of stain we wanted, but Lowe's didn't. We bought a five gallon bucket of the stain, which had to be mixed in the store. It cost $165, so I was glad that they gave me the veteran discount without a fuss. It turned out that five gallons wasn't enough, and we decided we'd better have extra so we went back and bought another five gallons. This time the clerk absolutely refused to give me the 10% discount, and the manager backed him up. I was furious, but in the long run what made me the maddest was that I wasn't thinking fast enough to just tell them, "Fine, keep it", and walk out. I know from experience that they would have taken a much bigger than 10% hit on that five gallon bucket having to sell it as a remnant. There are other Home Depot stores within reasonable driving distance, so I wish I had gone to one of them to try my luck. Whether I got a discount or not, I wouldn't have had to pay more, and there would have been some satisfaction in it that way.

where do you get a miniature dd214... all I got is the full sized one??

I don't remember where I got it; I can't remember not having it, so it's probably been over 40 years. I'm sure any place that does copies, like Kinko's, Office Depot, FedEx, or a custom printing shop, could miniaturize and laminate any document for you. What's more puzzling is where I would have gotten it done before 1976, so maybe the DoD provided it along with the original. I can't even remember whether I was given my DD 214 upon leaving the army, or it was mailed to me later.

I rarely even ask about any kind of discount as I don't feel the need to be awarded for doing my job while serving my Country.

That said, I was in HD the other evening, and had about $350 worth of stuff. Why, I don't know, but the girl at the checkout made the comment that I looked military.....even though I've got about a 2 month growth of beard. I told her I was, but that was long ago.

Her reply was that she didn't care, and that I deserved a veterans' discount anyways, so she gave it to me. I didn't ask for it, nor expect it, but it was like she wanted to do something for me, to she her appreciation for my service, even though it was over 20 years ago, and I basically felt it would be rude to tell her no, as it seemed to make her happy to do it.

It's not a huge logical leap to conclude that they figured out it was costing them too much money so they modified the program. There are a lot of people who served in the military out there.

Now, if you're not active or disabled, you have to be RETIRED military, meaning serving 20+ years, except on certain days when anyone that put on a uniform gets the discount.

I have never asked for the veterans or the old peoples discount. I wish they would give it to the family that the parents are in their 20's and have little kids to support, have jobs and are not on welfare.----Tee
