038 stihl gas tank

Anyone have experience with aftermarket gas tanks. I have found a cheap one with no brand name that ships from Hong Kong. Also found one made by big bear and another by NWP. Any suggestions please?

You can probably get a Stihl branded used one if you contact local Stihl dealers. You can also go to arboristsite.com and ask about the tanks in the chainsaw forum, they'd know. Never heard of Big Bear but NWP has a good rep. The 038 is a fine saw from what I consider the best of Stihls line. I wouldn't hesitate to put money into it. I'm doing complete re-builds on 2 028's now and have no fears it's worth it.

I put a new jug and piston on it awhile back that I got from Bailey's. I can get a tank from them for $100 that's made by NWP. I don't mind spending the money if it's made in the usa or is good quality. I don't want to spend that and end up with the same thing I can get on eBay for $35. Just.dont know if there is a difference. I will try the arborist forum.
I think the only tank that will fit is the 038 and I don't want another used one as most are in poor shaps.

(quoted from post at 09:37:16 12/10/16) I'm curious - what happened to the old tank?

I have an 038 and really like it.

038 are great saws. The tank is cracked and old. I have patched it before. Stihl tanks are poorly designed. Biggest problem occurs because people either hold on the the rear handle when trying to start or when they get bound people yank on them. It's very hard on the tank. Especially when it is old and brittle. I won't loan out my saws.
