What are these for?

I found four of these in the shed. Milk cans or for something else. Galvanized, about 5 gallons.

They look familiar, and I associate them with milk handling, but I can't remember how. Maybe years ago when the bulk truck picked up the milk?

Could they be used for Whey ? most milk trucks had a bulk tank with whey in them
fill old milk cans or maybe those things you have

They look like old Hinman milking machine cans. I don't know if I spelled the name right but my Grand daddy and Daddy used them until the early 50's.

I think the way the handles are designed to go down the side of the can almost to the center of gravity, would indicate they were NOT used for carrying 40-50lbs of milk, it would be rather awkward and a real leg slapper. Not a very good rim/lip to seal a cover against, also. I have used "shot gun" cans, buckets, DeLaval heavy milker buckets, Surge milker buckets, 5-gallon pails but have never seen anything like those. The one reason the handles are so made, indicate the "can" was to be carried horizontally for some reason

They are milk cans. I can not tell you the brand. I saw a farmer using cans just like those back in the early 1960s. His milking machine filled each can. He then carried these cans out to where he dumped them into a strainer on top of a regular milk can. The handle on the side was to make it easier to dump the can into the strainer. The milking machine was on a cart with a shelf/ledge out the front that these cans set on. I was with my Grand Father and he was buying some cows from the fellow.

Here is a picture of a can that looks like yours with some of the milker equipment on and around it.

That's got to be it JD. Dad had DeLaval milkers just like in your picture but with a different style bucket. In fact they're still on the rack in the milkhouse. I always figured the shape of the handle was for pouring.

JD's picture shows the pulsator on top of the bucket. I have one like it . I think I still have the IH compressor from the old cooler for the cans.

I have 3 stainless milker pails with a bail. The bail held the cover/lid with milker parts on the pail.
