wiring relays

On the little square plastic automotive relays how to use 2 of then to reverse a motor? I have or had a diagram but can't find it now.

Usually switch #5 and #8 on a single phase
AC motor. Ifor you are talking about a 12
volt DC motor, then just switch positive and
negative usually.

I can't think of a way to do that with an auto relay. The automotive relays I have are single pole double throw.

I'm thinking drills reverse direction using a DBDT switch, similar to a 4 way switch in house wiring.

Idj, I dont think you can do this with the small relays. You need a reversing relay
to do this. Check Surplus Center. #11-3421. $32.95. There is a wiring diagram
on there web site showing how to hook it up. Bob

Idj, I did some checking, you can do it with the small relays. Look up Surplus Center, item number 11-3222. It is the relay and plug. Good for 40 amps. Wiring diagram on web page shows you how to wire. Bob

Thanks very much, just what I was looking for.

If you're talking something like a car
window motor, it can be done with 2
standard relays. Wire them both to ground
when not triggered, then use a spst (or
dpdt) to trigger one relay at a time.

Here are three pictures I have saved over the years. Using the little square 5 pole relays is one picture, there is one picture using 4, 3 pole (body ground) relays for heavier amps and then another that is just for fun as it says on the sheet. It drove me nuts trying to understand why the manufacturer used 3 relays.

I remember working on Japanese cars in the '70s and '80s; that was when they had cascades of relays; tripping other relays, tripping more relays, tripping some more relays, tripping yet more relays....and we never had any factory wiring manuals. Just the single page for the entire car you got in a Chilton.

If it wasn't something pretty obvious, we told them to take it to the dealer, they had the good manuals and more important, an identical car with know good parts they could swap parts off. That saved so much time being able to just plug in another part and not spend an hour going thru a trouble shooting exercise to get the same result.
