Lincoln 225 Ranger

I am going to an auction on Saturday to try to buy a Lincoln 225 Ranger portable welder. I went and looked at it today and it looks to be in fair shape. Starts and runs good. Both the welding and generator side work. Took a piece of scrap with me and rod and it welds smooth. It has just shy of 2,000 hours on it with a Kohler gas engine. Overall condition looks to be decent. It came off of a service truck and the paint is a little faded, but doesn't look abused. Engine and gen compartment are clean.

So, here is my question. What is a fair price for this thing? New they look to be in the $3,200 $4,000 range. What would you pay for one working with the hours that are on it? Looking on ebay they are scarce used so I have no good baseline to work from.

The bonus is it will also replace my small off brand gen set to run the house then we loose power in the winter months. My current gen set only makes 4,000 watts and is a little small for my needs sometimes.

Thanks,

Greg

They are a good smaller portable welder but I would be concerned about the 2000 hours on a Kohler motor. The newer Kohler motors have not all been good in the things I have seen them in. I have bought several JD zero turn mowers with under 1000 hours that have the Kohler motors and that have had engine troubles.

JD, the Kohler is my concern. It seems to run really good right now and no smoke or odd noises. I am sure the gen/welder part of it will go along time yet. I have a newer Kohler in my garden tractor and it has had it's share of issues. Nothing too costly or hard to fix, just a pain now and then and parts always seem to be a week out.
They only break down when you are trying to use them though, so if I don't use it much it shouldn't break down much. Right? HA.

The one your looking at would not be worth more than $1000-1200 with the hours. The trouble with generator and welder motors they usually are not the same as the more common motors. The crankshaft is always different but many time the rest of the motors is odd too.

I worked at Lincoln and as I recall they used the old K series Kohlers which were good engines. I don't remember is that is a AC or DC machine. If DC, I'd say go for it if it's primarily for welding. The AC types were better as generators than welders. If memory serves there are two throttle settings. Around 1800 for welding and 3600 for gen.

Bemidji craigslist, looks like a good deal.

Like new Lincoln Electric welder-generator, Ranger 10000, Kohler 20 HP electric start engine, good battery and Lincoln canvas cover, only 54 hours use, comes with welding leads shown in photos, runs and welds great, Asking $2175. cash.
