window glass replacement

I'm replacing some glass in some wood storm windows. How much smaller should the glass be than the actual opening? What is the best way to put in the push points without breaking the glass?

Small enough to fit into the sash without forcing. I never try to undersize by some specific amount.

Don't know what type of glaziers points you have. If you have a "driver", lay your tappy hammer on the glass, and strike the driver by sliding the hammer on the glass.
This way you won't miss and strike the glass.

I use a 4 in one painters tool to push the glazers points in. About an eith inch undersize on the glass. I put a thin coat of glazers coumpound on, smooth it with the 4 in one, ser the glass and put the points in. Then follow up with another coat of glazers putty. Bevel with the 4 in one.

I always did 1/16 under, and pushed the points with a screwdriver. be sure you prime the wood before glazing. The putty doesn't stick to the bare weathered wood.

When you get to painting, there must be a narrow line of paint that extends past the putty and on to the glass. If any putty is left exposed, however small, that is where the weather will get in and attack the putty. If you mask for the paint line, know that UV will harden the adhesive on common masking tape and make it extremely difficult to remove. While scraping the tape off, the narrow paint line gets gouged and your back to square one. Intensity of the sun determines what happens to the tape. If you can get the tape off in a few hours, no problem.

Or just use 3 day green tape works in the boat yard

When I was a teen, I was tasked with the job of fixing up our house. This included the restoration of wooden, sash windows, including the steps you describe. We lived down on the Texas coast and the summers were sweltering, when the work had to be done. I swore and never broke the promise to myself that I WOULD NEVER NEVER OWN A HOUSE WITH WOODEN WINDOWS! And it looks like the promise will hold to the end.
