Help me out here guys. I have a few of the old style 6v lanterns, the ones that use the big screw terminal batteries like this- http://www.batteryjunction.com/rayovac-918.html

Question- I cannot find anyone making a rechargeable battery like this, but those old lanterns were great. If I had the case, how would I go about building a battery that can be recharged for it? If we can rebuild power tool packs at home, there's got to be a way to build a simple flashlight battery. And with allt he room in the case, I'd think you could build one that had a good run time too.

Hello Bret 4207,

You can use subc size cells found on cordless tools. IT would take 5 cells to make 6volts. You coul.d also
use lithium batteries, two in seiesw will be 8 volts. Then parallel the cells for more capacity. You will
need the charger for what ever you choose. Let me know if you need mkre help,

Guido.

Have you tried to find an LED bulb that fits your lantern? I've converted my 6 volt lanterns to LED bulbs for less than the cost of a new battery each. Now my lantern batteries last about three to five times as long because the LED bulbs don't drain the batteries as fast as an incandescent bulb does and they will still work with a low battery that can no longer power an incandescent bulb.

Alao look uo thestore batterys and bulbs.
There is one about twenty miles from me.
They have all kinds of power cells and lots
of advice on how to do. They rebuild battery
packs too. Now what you can do is very
carefully take your old one apart and
install a set of high power rechargeable
cells. Did that with a couple of railroad
lanterns.

Hello Bret4207,

I forgot that I made one up for a fried. I think I put 8 or 10 18650'S in parallel. So the lantern is 4 volts, and pretty bright. At 1500 Man each cell it is a 12 amp hour capacity. They are also available in much higher amp hour ratings. I charge it for him in the fall, and lasts him all winter. Another plus is the keep the voltage for many weeks-months. He uses is it going to the wood pile at night. You may not be able to do much better with sub C cells,

Guido.

Brett my most used flashlight are the
freebie from HF that I carry in pocket.
Also use smart phone as a flashlight.

Thanks so much for the ideas guys! I really like the idea of using the small motorcycle battery. Switch the bulbs to 12v LEDs and I'd be a happy camper! Or I could use one of those rechargeables with the coil spring contacts and enclose them in the battery case. Great ideas as usual!

George, we have several of those blue HF LED lights in the barn. Great tools. I used to have a cell with a flashlight but it died. Current flip phone doesn't have one. Not a chance in you know where this guy is ever going to have a so called "smart phone". Tools of satan as far as I'm concerned...and I'm not really joking too much when I say that.

I use rechargeable batteries for my trail cameras. All except one are 12 volts so easy to buy lawn mower batteries for them. The six volt one is a problem but with a lot of looking on the internet I came across a couple of little six volt rechargeable batteries and for 15 bucks, free shipping I ordered them. Works great as I use an old rechargeable drill charger to recharge them at a really slow rate, and rotate the two batteries .

I have a prepaid Verizon smart phone, $45 a month unlimited calls and 3 G of data. I dropped my landline and ISP at my place at the north end. Smart phone was cheaper. Not to mention, I'm never home for landline.

I love having gas buddy and Google maps on phone. If I can save $.30 a gallon on gas and I need to fill up the truck and a few cans, I can easily save $10 with gas buddy. Well worth the money especially when traveling. Google maps also shows you when the traffic is backed up. I left Indy, saw I 70 had a major accident. Took 40, along with all the truckers that would normally use 70. Accident backed up traffic for many hours.

Good for you George, glad you're happy. My experience has been that people become so totally involved in the stupid phone that they can't work, eat or sleep, much less drive, without it. People hand them to their kids and wonder why their boys are watching porn 24/7 and their little girls are texting naked pics of themselves to scum sucking low lifes the parents didn't even know they knew. You can have it. I have a PHONE in my pocket and that's as far as I'm willing to go.
