synthetic motor oil

Nothing is man made. It all has to start with something that occurs naturally. Either crude oil from the ground, minerals from the ground, or plants. Man only has the ability to create by using those naturally occuring elements.

There are at least two types of base oil stock used to make synthetic oil. Hydrocracked mineral oil is a type of purified mineral based oil stock used to make synthetic oil. Another is PAO - Poly-alpha-olefin base stock oil made from natural gas is the more expensive base oil, but makes a better synthetic oil.

If you would like to know WAY more than you ever thought you could about motor oil, go to bobistheoilguydotcom. They also discuss filters, grease and almost every lubricant for vehicles known to man...

Ah, finally my specialty. I am a process operator at Motiva Enterprises Refinery in Pt. Arthur, Texas. I run the largest (most barrel per hour rate) of three "lube" units in the plant. My unit makes the base oil for "synthetic" motor oil and transmission fluid. Funny thing about my process is that the lighter oil just "happens" as a by-product of the process, we capture it and sell it. The "next generation" of synthetics is being made from natural gas and has even greater lubrication properties than what I make from crude oil. It is a privilege and pleasure to work here.

What is the lighter oil your are talking about being a by-product what? Someone told me a long time ago that propane was also by-product of refining and they capture it and sell it.

Base stock is Poly Alpha Olefin (PAO) which is also used as a high voltage insulating oil. Difference in the two are the additives used in engine lubricants. WWW has significant information about PAO.

I didn't say it was required. Just repeating what a tech rep told me that was selling it for high voltage insulation/component cooling.

Somehow a barrel of Mil l 23699 followed me home when I was flying the F4. That's what lubed the J79. 220 Qts of oil goes a long way. But I paid for it by NOT DUMPING 2000 lbs (700 gals) of JP-5 a few weeks later. LOL

I understand the Amisol or however you spell it founder was flying F86 Jets in Korea and happened onto the oil they were using in their turbines. Figured it would work for cars and trucks. The rest is history.
