Kerosene Prices-for Parts Washer

My small parts washer (about three gallons) is low on solvent. I want to use kerosene in it since mineral spirits is too harsh.

Where do you buy kerosene? The cheapest I can find is $10.88 a gallon, or five gallons for $43.74.

I can't pay that much.

I buy it at the gas station, up to $4+ a gallon at times but sometimes less. It is dyed red here, not sure if that would be a problem in some way in a parts washer.

I get mine at the local independently owned hardware. Once in a great while I notice a K1 pump off to the side at a regular gas station.

Check around and see if you have any fuel depots in your area. Many times you can find a gas station that still has a kerosene pump and get ti for about the same as the price of diesel

I find it really hard to always keep my hands from getting in washer liquids and the dyed off-road-diesel seems to burn my skin, I find the same if I get dyed farm gas on my hands. The dyes must have something harsh in them...I'm sure medical people would call it cancer causing??

I use diesel fuel 2 parts, varsol one part and a quart of ATF , works well. Always close the lid on your parts washer as most mixture will evapourate.

Here in SE Michigan, there are a few gas stations that carry K-1. It typically runs around 4 bucks a gallon at the pump.

No, I'd call it a Solvent. The "burning" sensation is caused by the solvent action REMOVING the body oils from your skin.

Non-dyed Gasoline or Diesel, Kerosene, Lacquer Thinner, Naptha, Acetone, MEK, Methylene Chloride, etc. will ALL remove body oils from the skin with prolonged or repeated contact. Also, you may be allergic or have a sensitivity to the chemicals used in the dyes.

When I was a whole lot younger, I used to work in the Chemical Industry and I found that I was hyper-sensitive to certain solvents, while other solvents I could Bathe in them without any adverse effects.

Take appropriate precautions when working with Fuels or Solvents.
