Mesures batteries CCA

This is what I use to measure a batteries CCA. It even lets you know when you have a bad cell. I'll never be without one. I discovered today I had a battery with a dead cell.

After buying this tester I gave my load tester to BIL.

Would'N a volt meter do the same thang... A guy gave me one to use and keep till I made my mind up to hand him over my money. After a month are so I gave it back to him... You should have brought a good load tester and learned how to use it...

I hope we are still buds but that's my take on'em...

Hello Hobo NC,

That is all I use to test batteries, volt meter there is! Once the load is applied by the consuming motor,
volt meter tells the tale. No load tester needed, I have no use for a load tester now, but used the vat 40
for years when I was gainfully employed.
You have missed some if my posts on the load testing with a carbon pile load tester I guess.
We are still buds for now! Ha! Ha!

Guido.

We have a simular one at work, same brand different model. It definitely does much more than a volt meter, and I feel it's even better than a carbon pile tester. Often for example a group 31 battery of around 950 cca will be weak but still good for lesser machines, if you test it at the 950 and it says 600 cca replace battery I will then tell it that it's only a 600 cca battery. Often it will say good battery and I will use it in a different machine. Sometimes it will still fail, bad cell or other reason. Definitely a good tool to have if you own a "fleet" of stuff, if you got one tractor and a pickup, save your money and just replace batteries as needed, if you got a half dozen machines etc it sure is helpful

Got one from Harbor Freight. About 1/3 the cost. So far, seems to be the cat's meow. Very similar to the expensive one that my battery dealer uses, at least in function. Just a heavy duty case.

Ted,
Not sure if it will work on 6v. I only have 12v. I'm leaning towards to telling you it won't because yesterday I tested a battery and the tester detected a dead cell. geo.

Mike,
I don't leave home with out mine in the truck. Takes the guess work out of determining if battery is bad. I too am surprised how accurate it is. If everyone had one, there wouldn't be any more posts about battery issues.

If I have a problem, the battery is the first thing I test. Saves a lot of guess work.

Local Oreilly's uses one of those types for their free testing.

I've had two cars with slow/no start problems. After a battery charge, both would start fine for several days. Had them tested and reported ok. They gave me the print out as proof the battery was OK.

I finally just replaced the batteries and all was good.

So, IMO these are OK, but not the definitive answer if you're chasing an intermittent no start issue.

I've had a Motorola like the one pictured below since the late 70's. At one time they were a required tool at John Deere dealerships.

It does most of what the new-fangled digital ones do without the digits!
