This fellow posted this way of repairing holes in dry wall. I have seen and made butterfly patches before but never thought about using hole saws to make them with. Really makes for a much easier and smoother job.

Easy hole in dry wall repair

I don't know if it easiest by I thought it was pretty clever. I normally cut the hole out square and screw some scrap wood behind the hole and then screw a piece of sheetrock in the hole. Then a little joint tape and I'm ready for plaster.

Greg I usually patch hole this way too. Using the hole saw to make the patch and size the wall hole is what I had never thought of. I usually cut the hole out with a utility knife and shaped the patch the same way. Using the hole saws he has a much more uniform patch.

Hello JD Seller,

Neat patch, results speaks of the quality. However that is very time consuming. I use a rectangular patch. One nail in the center to keep form losing the wood piece. Sneake it in, screw into the wood through the dry wall, cut a piece to fill and spackle as needed. Lot faster, same results! Invisible patch......

JD, thanks for the post. Like others, I usually cut a square hole, screw some shims or paint stirrers at the edges for back support and glue in a patch and then mud over. I like this method better as the paper will feather easier as it's farther away from the hole itself and be less visible. Got a couple of doorknob holes that need patching. I'm going to try this method on them. :D
