Painting trailer wheels with tires on

I'm going to sandblast and paint 6 trailer wheels. I have always used masking tape to cover the tires but takes a long time to put on. Is there anything I can apply to the tires that would clean off easy after paint is dry ? Thanks

deflate the tire then place overlapping playing cards where the rim meets the tire, then reinflate the tire which captures the playing cards. Than add any more masking as needed.

Well if that ain't as slick as snail snot! Guess you could use a few sheets of printer paper too but I like your idea!

Regular opd grease works great. Just make sure its fully covered. When your done just wash or off.

Bubba applies used oil to rubber. Then use rag to wipe off overspray. Might have to wet rag with mineral spirots.

Vaseline works real well and does not soften the tire like oil or grease will. Plus Vaseline costs a lot less and is very easy apply and remove where as oil and grease will tend to stay on the tire and not wipe off easy

Make sure to let all or most of the air out of the tires..before sandblasting them, for safety. I use aluminum flashing rolled to fit the rim..then tape the end of flashing so it wont spring back..maybe 4" high piece...works good for priming and painting.

Many years ago I worked in a autobody repair shop. Our painters used rubbing compound mixed a little wet and applied it to the tires with a parts cleaner brush. Wait till the compound dries, paint the wheels, then rinse off the tires with a garden hose.

Since you're going to "sandblast and paint", do it right the first time and dismount the tires from the rims. Sandblast the entire rims, clean off the residual dust, hang the rims from wires fastened to your rafters or a spray stand, and paint the entire rims with a spray gun, first the Primer and then the Finish Coat. Now you don't have to fiddle-fart around trying to keep paint off the tires, and the rims are all nicely painted all over.

I gotta ask , what safety issue ? Welding , sure you're softening the metal with pressure inside , but sandblasting ? Little grains of sand bouncing off resilient rubber or tough as nails steel ?

When I worked at a manufacturing co. we used a steel ring that fit over the lip of the rim about 3" wide. Just laid it on the rim/tire and sprayed it, worked great. Need one for each rim size.

The trailer tires I have..are 80-90 PSI..if he uses an industrial sand blaster..and the rims are badly rusted it can blast thru the rim in a split second...and take your head off when the rim explodes. He didn't say, what type of blasting unit he has. The one I use is powered by an Ingersoll-Rand 250 diesel and a 600# Empire blast pot. It also depends on what type of blasting media he is using (steel shot, silica sand, black beauty, glass beads)so why not be safe? I won't blast a rim with that kind of pressure on it. If he uses a small blaster....I would still let the air out of the tires. Be safe out there.
