Neighbor asked me what I use to maintain batteries. I showed him my old batterminder 12248. He asked how much? Around $150.

Then he asked is there a good Cheap battery maintainer that will desulfate? I told him I don't know but I would ask here.
thanks

You didn't say what type of battery he wants to maintain. Battery Tender brand units have a great reputation. You can get a decent sized one for less than $50. One for a garden tractor or motorcycle will run around $25.

I was just at Wally World this afternoon. Bought one last week for $15.oo and today I snagged the last one for $5.oo! Close out of old model. Schumacher 2amp. Charger tender. Does 6 and 12 automaticly and desulfates. These are being phased out with a newer model. Look at 5he picture to see both. I am going to check another store tomorrow to see if there are any more available. I have like a 6 or 7 of these type of Schumacher units and love them. Leave them plugged in year round. I have garden tractors with 10 year old batterys that these tenders have kept spunky for all of this time. Worth every penny!

Been using Schumacher 2 amp battery maintainers on our local fire dept brush trucks and tankers for years, pumper came with a fancy $400 unit, only difference I see is it has a meter, high priced meter if you ask me.
Buddy of mine uses Battery Tender maintainers on his old hot rods

The small BatteryMINDer (1.3 amp) from northern tool is on sale right now for $30. I have used them for 10+ years, they are good weatherproof units that have the charge / maintain /desulfate functions.

I don't know about desulfating but I use a Harbor Freight trickle charger on vehicles not used a lot. The thing is only about 5 bucks so I have several of them for different vehicles.

I have tried several cheap ones and they don't hold up. I have went to Deltran and have had no problems with them but are not cheap.

No doubt maintainers prevent sulfation but it's doubtful a desulfator does anything. So any $5 wall wart maintainer will lengthen the life of any size battery. May even restore a battery somewhat after months of use.
But if you're looking to charge a battery use a charger not a maintainer.
Let a battery sit half full for a long enough time you'll get a battery with half the capacity.
