Dixon vs. Gravely ZTR Mower?

Given similar condition which mower would you choose, a 5023 Dixon (50" cut, 23 hp Kohler) or a 148 Gravely (48" cut, 21 hp Kawasaki FH)? I need to make a decision quite soon.

Thank you,

I have never liked Dixons. Junk on wheels as far as I'm concerned. They are almost out of business. I would go for the Gravely if those were my only two options. If I was buying a mower I would go with an Exmark.

I had a Dixon 42 inch ZTR and it was a good tough machine that ran well. I also got a good price for it at an consignment auction after about 5 years of use. I had no problems with it. I needed a larger mower is why I got a new one and it was not my choice for a larger machine.

I would choose the Kawasaki engine. My John Deere has one, and it's been trouble free for 3 years.

I don't have one but have a family member that has a Dixon and has had nothing but trouble with it. To me it's a cheaply built machine. Gravely is now owned by Ariens.

Depends on which Kohler, sometime back the Courage line had issues which started the bad press but most Kohler's are just as good as anything else.

I would stay away from the V-Twin Kohlers.
I've had a woods since 2004 with a V-Twin B&S that I bought used. Grasshopper bought Woods out. I've had just normal maintenance repairs on it the last 12 years. This year I broke the $1000 mark for repairs on it. So that's only $83.33 a year, this includes tires, batteries, voltage regulator, oil and filter changes, blades, belts and other normal wear items. I'm very satisfied with it. I know this doesn't help you with making your decision. Just had to add my 2 cents worth.

my experience with kawasaki has been bad. Scag 60" kawasaki 27 HP as i remember. nothing but trouble. Finally not reparable because of bad case. Basically a throw away no fix motor. Currently using a 2008 Grasshopper with a 27hp kohler bought new. Great power and a superior machine to the scag that I once thought was a pretty good mower.

I bought the Gravely. Should get it home tomorrow or Tuesday. Looks like a very well built machine. 1026 lbs. I'll post a picture when I get it home.

Thank you for each of your comments.
