Picked up a Hobart welder-generator, tag model # G-213. Has the two cylinder Wisconsin THD gas engine. RPM lists 1800/2200, been told the generator side does not work. There's an up/down toggle switch on the upper right side, but not sure where it should be as the whole outfit has been painted over. Anyone have an extra operators manual laying around that they would sell? Thanks for any info..

Learnt from working on sailplanes.

If you have a painted over like that get yourself a towel type pad that will cover it and back it with plastic wrap. Then soak it in acetone and hold it over the painted problem.

Some testing here - hold it for a while and check if you can scrape that paint layer off.

If not give it some more till it does.

You can remove one layer at a time if you need.

My Hobart (not the same model) has a fuse inside that will blow. You have to take the whole shell off to get to it. Like to have never found it.

I had an old Hobart welder that wouldn't weld. I had it running and clamped the electrode lead to the ground lead and revved the engine way up and all of a sudden it loaded up. The generator had lost its residual magnetism and only put out a small current but by connecting the two leads and revving it to a higher than normal RPM sent enough current thru the windings to create a larger magnetic field to "Flash" or "Polarize" the gen set again. After that it welded just fine.
My small 4500 portable generator quite generating recently. I plugged my 1/2" electric drill into it while the generator was running, I pulled the trigger on the drill and turned the chuck by hand and that's all it took to repolarize the generator. The drill took off and generator is operating fine now. I would try these tricks first before tearing anything apart.
