why don't they just publish a --$ H I T-- list? Tile contractor didn't finish the bathroom tile jobs just like I was afraid was going to happen. Our fault for hiring them, but not my choice. Wife took control and hired someone without checking references who talked like he was going do it all himself. Then first day sends 2 inexperienced mexicans who could barely speak english. They couldn't read either. It didn't help that the tile boxes were all marked in Italian. LOL

I feel for ya and are with ya. We had the same deal with drywall finishers. Original guy was a no show, we kept waiting for him until it was holding up the entire job (our fault) By then we needed somebody in a hurry and made the mistake of advertising our need on Craigs list and got every dirt bag scammer in the mid west trying to get me to give them 1/3 of the $ prior to showing up. Ended up OK as a known local guy felt sorry for us and worked us in.

I read somewhere that Angie's list is worthless because almost all of the tradesmen send in their own recommendations. Angie's List does NOT check them out, so it's buyer beware.

I also understand (maybe because of what you've said) they are on the verge of bankruptcy.
