Cause and effect

I've repaired the hydraulic cylinders to the stabilizers many time on the last terramite I purchased recently. The unit is 16 years old and has been used, abused and left out side to get wet.

The welds on the cross pins had been welded many times. Seals replaced. I've repaired each cylinders on stabilizer at least 5 times. Spent more money on repairs and a new cylinder costs.

Then I decided there has to be a cause. That's when I pulled the stabilizer arm off. Discovered the hole the pin goes in was egg shaped. A friend works at a machine shop. His boss let him do this job off the clock. He drilled the 1 inch hole out to 1.25 inches and I installed split bushings. Worked better than I expected. Hoping to put an end to rebuilding at least 2 cylinders.

I knew my friend wouldn't except any money, so I gave him a $50 gift certificate to Olive Garden. I know he likes to go to Red Lobster and Olive garden. I figure I got the better deal.

Good deal ! I have a buddy who is a mechanic and will come over and give me a hand if I can't figure something out. We usually trade. He will help me for an afternoon and then when he needs help with firewood or something I go help him. Too bad more people don't do that. I think we would be better off ! Always good helping friends and neighbors !

It's amazing what a little wear will do. Everyone thinks I'm crazy because I spend thousands on the combine every year replacing parts that aren't worn completely out. Machines are made to operate within the set of perimeters they have when new. Anything less is hard on the machine. It's also hard on the pocketbook when it picks the worst time to finally fail. I'd have done the same thing.
