good used anvil

What is a good used anvil worth? It weighs about 150 lbs and is quite nice on surface and nose, but hasn't been machined perfectly flat.

I've looked on the internet and see new ones range between about $600 and $1000.

Thanks for your replies. Ron

The old standard was a dollar a pound, but that's really gone up as hobbyists and collectors snap them up. $2-3 a pound is closer, with good name-brand ones in good shape fetching a premium to that. Many of the newer "anvils" are Chinese cast iron junk and not worth consideration by anyone remotely serious about using one, though good ones are still made. The problem with buying any anvil is that shipping them any distance can soon make even a bargain buy cost-prohibitive, which also needs to be figured into the cost.

Last one I saw listed on Craig's lost the guy wanted $600 which is $4 a pound which to me seems to be a bit high

It really depends on many factors. There are some I wouldn't pay scrap for and there are others that are almost worth their weight in gold. This is akin to asking what is a tractor worth. A picture is worth a thousand words.

So, in summary, is the anvil signed or marked with the manufacturer? Is it in good shape, I.E. the top surface flat and not "wallowed out". Has some idiot cut into it with a cutting torch etc, etc. Check out the anvil fire site for more info.

Depends on what you mean by "good". No doubt you can buy a cast-iron Chinese "anvil" for a couple of hundred bucks. Expect to pay close to a grand for a 150 lb Kohlswa anvil in good condition.

Picked up a Sheffield anvil a few years ago at a flea market in Somerset VA. Paid $195 for it. It is about 125 lbs. It would probably bring at least $700 dollars if advertised.
I bought it for a friend. I should have sold him my old military anvil and kept it for myself.

A good 150 pounder will bring $600 to $1000. One that has some damage but still usable about half that. I watched the top half of an anvil (about 40 pounds - I have no idea how they managed that) bring $100 at a farm auction a month ago in NE Kansas.

We have one at the farm right ouside the shop. Probably 150 pounds if I had to guess and it mounted on a big chunk of hardwood. It's old and even being on the wood still has a nice ring to it. Know a couple guys who bought cheap and theirs don't quit sound the same. My great grandad was a blacksmith in the late 1800's and early 1900 's and I wish I had some of his old tools !

I have had inquiries of people wanting to buy it.

I'm in Southern MN

Attached is a picture. I don't see any brand name or manufacturer name.

That looks to be in decent condition. Most older anvils have their faces all beat up from abuse.

It looks like it's a wrought iron anvil with a steel face. You should be able to tell by looking carefully at the side of the anvil for the joint between the anvil and face. If so, it's pretty old and should bring around 500 bucks (IMO).

My son asked me if I wanted an anvil. I asked how much? Free, people were moving. They put anvil at the street, couldn't sell it.

Not sure how much it weighs, but it looked like it wasn't used much.
