6-12 volt battery charger

I finally let all the smoke out of my Schumaker 10 amp charger. My riding mower battery didn't have quite enough juice to start the engine, even though I bought the battery last spring. So, I hooked up the charger to it. The gauge quit working ten years ago, but I could tell it was charging by the hum. This time, though, the hum was louder than usual. I check the connections, and they were correct. After about 20 minutes, the hum became even louder, then stopped. Out came the smoke, and she don't sing to me no more. I think I bought it before Walmart came to Texas. I guess I'll have to go shopping for something to replace it.

Too late for you but it could have been saved when the loud buzzing started. That's the sound of shorted $2 worth of diodes. Happened to my 50 year old Schumacker about 15 years ago. I took it apart, went to a auto electric repair shop and bought two Lucas alternator diodes.

Take a trip to your local walley world. The one in the photo works great as a charger and maintainer. Also desulfates batteries. You can buy a bigger one while you are there but the $20.oo one works fine and keep you battery at snuff. I have four of them and they work great.

By the way, exact same thing happened to my miller wire welder. Because of that battery charger blowing it's diodes, I saved my $1800 welder.

My local Wally World had that same, exact model on sale for $10 last week. I should have purchased it, but didn't. I regret it.

Thanks Gambles and circus for replies. I guess my charger was over 40 years old...probably time for a change.

Hi Jeff,
I looked for that model in my local Walmart, but they don't have it. They have 6 other models. Maybe I can find one that's similar.
