Cleaning a bore

What is the best thing to Clean a cylinder bore after honing. I have seen dawn and atf used any help would be appreciated

I was always told to use soap and water. I use purple power. And then wipe the cylinders until the towel comes out clean to be sure you got all the hone grit.

I like strong laundry detergent dissolved in the hottest water you can stand. Old terrycloth rags scrub good and don't leave much lint, various brushes as required.

Immediately after scrubbing begin rinsing with the spray nozzle. Keep scrubbing while rinsing to float out as much grit as possible.

I like to follow with compressed air and oil/atf wiped on with paper shop towels.

There will be some discoloration from the water wash but it's only cosmetic.

A wipe down with muriatic acid can deplete any aluminum deposits left behind from Pistons letting it sit in there for several minutes or better, then followed up with dish soap and water. If they were honed I'm not sure if the acid would be needed though

I try to purchase lacquer thinner, and wipe down with only used news paper. Then a abundant amount of engine oil. 10 W seems to be fine.

Bob..

I use lacquer thinner with only a USED NEWS paper to wipe clean. Then with my hand (gloved) add a abundant amount of 10 W engine oil on cylinder bores.

Improper cleaning has ruined a lot of hone jobs. A quick wipe with a rag is same as not cleaning at all. Outside of expensive equipment made for the job the guys are right on in suggesting hot water and soap. I keep a selection of bore brushes in the shop for this and drive them with homemade extensions when need be. You can approximate this with a wad of rags taped to a rod but a bush is best. The check for clean is a clean white rag with some light oil on it, K-1 will work if you have some around. Wipe the bore and when the rag comes out looking like it went in you have it clean.

Believe it or not, but "HEET" fuel de-icer is very useful. Put some in a squirt can and use during the actual honing process. It not only keeps everything cool, but carries away the gunk at the same time. Be very generous with it.

Every manual I ever saw said to use detergent soap. Follow by wiping with paper towels . If there are any signs of dirt on the paper towels go back to the detergent step and repeat. Oil right after cleaning .

Scrubbing with soap and hot water is the best, but difficult to do on an engine with crankshaft etc still installed. May cause more damage to rest of engine than good if not done properly. You can use a good clean lint free rag soaked in light engine oil and do so until clean rag comes out clean.

Detergent and HOT water. Dry and oil immediately. I used to have an IH truck shop manual that said to wipe with clean white rags and detergent motor oil until the rags came out clean but that seems like a lot of work and rags. No matter what, if there is any hint of discoloration clean it again.
