Computer performance issue

I have a Dell computer, using Windows 7 Home Edition operating system, Internet Explorer browser, and MSN.com as my home page. It has been running increasingly poorly for a long time. Some of the problems are specific issues that I understand but haven't taken the time to fix yet. For example, the video display card is failing, and updating the display driver has not corrected the problem---I just have to put in a new card. But there are two very annoying problems which may or may not be due to problems with the hardware or software. One is that the screen often freezes and I get a message informing me that Internet Explorer has stopped running. Sometimes it starts running again without me having to do anything, but sometimes I have to close it and restart it. The other annoying problem is that images on the screen move up and down when I'm looking at them. This means that when I click on a particular item onscreen, the screen often moves at the same time so that I am taken to a place I didn't choose. An example of this is that the MSN home page features a section with two pictures at a time of about a dozen news items that you can scroll through using forward and back arrows on the sides of the pictures. When I'm not interested in an item and choose to move on, the picture often moves up or down so that my cursor clicks on the item---which opens it---instead of on the arrow to move on. This situation is much worse on any of the ad infested click-bait screens which, admittedly, I should probably avoid altogether, anyway. In that situation, it seems much more intentional because that provider wants me to spend more time on the page, and to click on advertisers' links, whether I mean to or not. What can you tell me about these issues?

I recently learned that by reinstalling the operating system many performance issues will go away. Apparently after years of use the system gets bogged down with system errors and everything slows. Of course you must back up all the files you want to keep and reinstall any programs you want. One of the nice things is that it wipes the hard drive and you have a fresh start. I recently went back to Windows 7 after making the mistake of Windows 10. A clean install was done with none of the other bundled software that comes from the factory. Did two lap tops and both are working very well now. If you have the disks you can do this yourself. If no disks then your computer has a product key that you can use to get the installation disks from the Microsoft. If no product key and no disks you have to buy Windows 7 for around $127. It was worth the cost. Don't know if this helps you, but it helped my computer issues. Wish you the best. Needless to say, I am not a computer guy.

Hello Stan In, Oly WA,

I would think the video card is part of your issues. Take the card out and clean the contacts with a Qtip and some alcohol. When you put the card back, put it in and out a few times. Seat the card all the way and hope for the best I would update your browser and then do a virus clean up

you maye have several problems that have developed...
1) Hard drive capacity is too small...not enough space for temporary files
2)too many temporary files are present....use the windows disk clean up for this
3) as was mentioned the video card has an issue...try to get a new on if faulty
4)Instead of Internet explorer use Firefox..its a better browser
5)Have you ever scanned for malware? Download and run the free version of malware bytes..it may find something.

I was the IT manager at a local company for several years, and GlenIdaho is right, a complete rebuild of the OS will do wonders. Other than a complete rebuild the best option is download CCleaner (the free version) and analyze and clean all the unused crap off your hard drive. When thats done, click on registry and scan for issues and fix all the errors and crap that has accumulated in there (Be sure to let it back up the registry before you clean it). As far as the video problem, other than the bad video card, as someone said use Firefox, its a lot better browser, but nothing will cure the problem of poor website design and slow servers loading you up when you go visit a site. A slow computer and a slow internet connection will make this worse too. Good Luck.

Stick in my two cents. Do cleans, also defrag cause you will not beleave how much crap is on there. Another thing is a lot of web sites and programs take a huge amount of computer power got on their opening page. You may not have enough RAM and also your hard drive is at 95% full of junk or has bad sections and read problems. Follow all of the posts and see what you have.

Stan I use Firefox and change the always activate on Flash Player to ask to activate. Seems to help on my slower computer. Lynn

Here's a little something that will put all windows 7 tools at your fingertips.
1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop
2. select new folder
3. Name it with the following string exactly as shown
Do not capitalize any letters

{ed7ba470-8e54-465e-825c-99712043e01c}

4. press Enter and the new folder will automatically be named "God Mode" All windows tools, adjustments, fine tuners, troubleshooters etc. will come up in a list instead of looking all over the place for them when you click on the folder. Very handy tool..

I also have problems with the MSN web page so it is not your computer.
Internet Explorer is also a problem child. Try Firefox.

Did not work for me.

It seems like every year or so we end up taking the computer to the shop because it isn't working and they straighten out a lot of stuff like that while fixing the main problem. Last winter we had it in for the second time for a dead backup battery and they told us to leave it on all the time which we now do, it goes into sleep mode after a few minutes, OK. But why did a computer used to go years without a battery change and now you can't go even a year? Neither of us are computer nerds.

Sorry Chuck My fault I wrote it incorrectly Here is the correct string... I left out the "god mode and the period" in the filename. It works in windows 7 not sure about the others

Create new folder on desktop and name it.....

God Mode.{ed7ba470-8e54-465e-825c-99712043e01c}
