My cousin has John Deere Model D Serial number 112339. Can someone tell us what year this is and the proper procedure to start it? He and his father restored it but unfortunately his father did not show him how to start it before he died.
ANY help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

1931 I have never started a D but have started several A,Gs make
sure its in neutral clutch pulled back. Turn on fuel open both
compression reliefs put choke on open throttle about half turn
flywheel slowly counter clockwise you will hear air coming out
when pistons are coming up on compression look at the flywheel you
will see left hand imp. mark around the 3:00 position grab
flywheel with both hands near the top pull it forward letting goi
with the left and then the right. The engine should pop or try to
start try to get choke off if it don't stay running turn flywheel
like before with choke off when it starts close comp. releifes.

I have had a couple D's over the years. As said below, gas on, compression petcocks open, choke closed, pull it up to compression. Then rock the flywheel back and forth 3-4 times, you will hear the sound in the
intake change. Open the choke half way, then pull the flywheel over the top of compression. It should start within a couple of turns. Honestly, if it hasn't been started in a while, I would get it pull started
first. That engine will wear you down quick.

...and if you have no idea what any/all of this terminology means, you might do well to locate a local John Deere club and find someone there who could pay you a "house call" and show you what everything is and how to start the tractor.
