Grease gun recommendation

I believe my problem is, I've never spent enough buying one. I always struggle with them. Especially adding a tube of grease. Anybody got a recommendation for one? I'd rather not have pneumatic or electric, but if somebody knew one was easy to load, and unload the empty, I would go that route.

I had always worked with hand-me-downs, or left overs. I finally decided last year to gift myself with an electric. Most around here have the Lincoln, sold by machinery dealers. I shopped, and decided on a 12V Milwaukee. It's handy and has legs to sit upright. It's made greasing so much more pleasant. I can now keep one hand on the tip, and easily carry and operate the gun with the other.

I also prefer manual grease guns. I bought one at local new
holland/kubota dealer two years ago this spring. The blue my was
more expensive than the Orange one. Exact same grease gun.
Loads quick and easy and I have run 4 cases of grease without any
problems. Haven't even changed tip yet. An added perk is the
orange color really stands out. Nathan

If it gets to the point that I can't use a manual grease gun I won't need one anymore. I'm sure a neumatic or electric gun is a big time saver.

This summer when my old battery powered gun gave up the ghost I went back to a hand pump gun. Bought it at Deere. The tip snaps on a zerk real tight. So far I am impressed but time will tell.

I prefer manual guns. I've got three around the shop, a cheap Plews, a Lincoln I like pretty well and a Monkey Wards one I like really well. 10, 20 and 50 years old respectively. The Wards one had a great inline swivel hose my dad made out of A/N fittings but it started leaking last year. Guess after 50 years its probably out of warranty, lol.

Once you get the grease gun you want get a LockNLube Grease Gun Coupler - Zerk Grease Coupler Fitting Tip - It locks on zerk & allows you to use both hands on grease gun. Saves grease too! About $30.00

Take a look at the lock and load grease gun from Legacy. Legacy is an Iowa company. No more concerns cross threading top or air locks. Nice gun.

I have had quite a few threw the years from manual to air to now we are on battery ones. Trailers still have manual ones mounted as a just in case.

As far as the battery ones go. I have a few Lincolns that all sit on a shelf now as the battery's are stone age technology and just do not last worth a crap. Those have been replaced with the Milwalkee 18v guys.

These milwalkee 18v guns have two speed pumping (one for mass, one for torque) It has a built in light to aid in finding zirks in the dark, but the thing that I like the best is the counter. You can set the counter for up to 50 pumps, pull the trigger and when it gets to the number that you set, it stops.

Good warranty on it too. Had the threads where the hose connects to the casting on the gun blow appart on a hard zirk. They gave me a brand new gun... not a question asked.

Simple thing I was shown many years ago by my supplier pretty much solved all my grease gun problems. The case your grease tubes comes in is marked "THIS END UP" for a reason. It puts the air bubble up next to the head where it can be dealt with when you install a new tube. When stored on the side the air bubble runs the length of the tube and you fight it until empty.

I have always been plagued by grease guns myself. The best advise I've got from
this site, is to keep the threads loose at the top, while pumping up a new
tube. That gives the air somewhere to go. Snug up after good flow.

Totally agree on the Milwaukee gun! Never had any problems with it and it cut my greasing time in half at least. I can grease the 8430 with disc and roller in a few minutes now and it take almost a whole tube. Another nice thing is i have about 20 batteries that fit all my other cordless tools.

George, that's funny, as I think it would be fair to say, they wrote the book on lubrication equipment and tools, or at least had a major hand in it given their longevity. I always thought their products were quality. I have at lease one of their lever grease guns and one of their volume pumps in really nice condition from the early-mid 40's, both have performed well.

I had manuals, then a couple Lincoln 12v's and now a dewalt 18v. dewalt is far superior to the Lincoln, plus you use batteries from your cordless tool line. I have a trick when filling that really seems to work. I keep a cool whip container of grease with a putty knife in it near where I keep the grease tubes. After putting the tube in, I fill the end completely up with grease from the container. Starts every time. Note ; if your cool whip containers are all in use as salad bowls, any type of container will work.

I get the $15 pistol-grip from Wal-Mart. It
comes with a hose, a pipe, and 2 tips. And
at $15, you don't feel so bad when it falls
in the hinge of the batwing and gets
crushed.
