Hands , the most important tools you have

My hands are almost doubled over with a genetic problem common to Nordic races [ how I ended up with it is an enigma ].
It's called Dupuytren's contracture and until recently was treated by fairly major surgery .
Next month it is being treated with a new drug called Xiaflex that is supposed to dissolve the cords preventing me from straightening my fingers , it is a fairly new procedure in Australia .
Has anyone had this done ? It seems almost too good to be true , it is a series of injections and then some manipulation over a few weeks instead of having your palms laid open, cut to ribbons and then suffering months of recuperation .

Hope it works well for you.

Please report back, on how this treatment works for you.

My mom had this syndrome and had the grizzly surgery on both hands... so it might be something that I inherit as I age (oh, yippee).

An old Danish immigrant ditch digger I knew when I was a little kid had hands he couldn't open. At that time it was blamed on having his hands wrapped around a shovel for so many years. He dug a tile ditch for us back in the later fifties when he was 80 years old. He passed away in 1958 when I was seven years old. Maybe he had what you have but it wasn't diagnosed back then. I wish you the best with your treatments.

I was diagnosed with Dupuytren's this past spring (as well as severe osteoarthritis in my neck and degenerative disc disease). I was blissfully unaware until my neck soreness didn't go away for months after smacking the back of my head on a barn post tackling a sheep that got away from our shearer. Sucks to get old! Worst in the morning. My doctor asked "why haven't you complained before about neck soreness and stiffness?" I said I wasn't sure how I was [i:74efd71eab]supposed[/i:74efd71eab] to feel when I woke up because I've never been this old before.

My Dupuytren's is very early and I was shown some tendon stretching exercises . . . but it is pretty inevitable I will lose hand function as I age. The good news is that it is painless.

I have Danish/Norman ancestors.

Good luck with yours. Reading through the possible side-effects on such things always gives me pause.

It has been six days now since I had the procedure . All seems to be going swimmingly . The process itself took about an hour and a half with some 30 injections as well as a few for anaesthetic .
Some bruising and pain but generally easily tolerable . I opted to have both done at once , cuts down on recovery and makes it a less drawn out process .
After three days the cords started breaking by themselves in my left hand . For the first time in five years I can make a fist , for the first time in maybe twelve I can lay my hand almost flat on a table .
Tomorrow is the decider , they will numb the hands and manually break the remaining weakened cords . Hopefully things will continue to improve .
